Good win for the Rockets playing at South Oldham. Does anyone have any details.

I thought South might get them at home. South has been flying under the radar this season. I saw them this summer and thought they would be pretty good.

Freakish game. Both teams are nowhere near what they will be at the end of the season, as both are so young that the mistakes come fast and furious. Don't expect what you see from these two teams today to be what you'll see come 8th Region time.

 

BIG STAT: Turnovers. Shelby had 30, South had 22!

 

note: 5 of South's 11 varsity players are freshmen. There are three seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore. Junior Jordann McGuffin is the lone returning starter.

 

Shelby also has just one returning starter, Haleigh LeCompte.

 

Shelby's issue is size...the tallest starter is 5'9", but they rebound very well for a shorter team. Using their quickness, they outrebounded the taller Lady Dragons approx. 34-27...

 

BIG STAT: Shelby made as many FTs (11) as South took (11). Worse for South, they hit just 4 of their 11 FTs.

South jumped to an early lead, but Shelby battled back and ever-so-slowly stretched their lead from 25-21 at the half, to 36-31 after 3Q to a ten point cushion with exactly 2:13 left. South turned up the heat on their press, and forced Shelby into numerous turnovers, allowing the Lady Dragons to pull to within 46-44. South had the ball with a chance to tie, but was called for walking with about 11 seconds to play. The Dragons fouled Paige Radcliff - who was a thorn in their side all night at the line, hitting 6 of 8 FTs - and Radcliff hit 1 of 2 with 9.9 to play, making it 47-44. South rebounded, but in the confusion, went for the easy layup instead of pulling up for the game-tying three for the final score of 47-46.

 

Pretty much a dead-even game. Shelby had trouble shooting over the taller South team, which had 5 or 6 blocks. South forced a lot of turnovers in their press, but gave up some easy looks when Shelby broke the press. Radcliff & LeCompte did a great job inside on the boards against a taller foe, and both hit some big free throws. On the South side, the Lady Dragons showed an ability to hit the three, which wasn't in their arsenal last year. Four different Lady Dragons nailed threes, including Jordann McGuffin (2), Allison Reynolds (2), Brooke Haysley, and Maddie Wright.

 

Both teams are very, very young and inexperienced, but you could still see the talent on both sides. Might want to get your shot at both now, before they grow up!
