I was reading the basketball preview in the Ledger earlier today.

 

Noticed that Georgetown, Ohio was 2007 state champs with a record of 28-0. Last year they were division champs and sectional semi-finalist, I believe that is right, with a record of 18-3.

 

I am not familiar with Ohio basketball but was wondering why they play so few a games. As state champs just 28, and a good season last year and just 21 games.

They pretty much all play 20 regular season games.

 

Last year Georgetown went 17-2 (I think one was cancelled due to weather) and won their division of their league (based on a 12-1 league record) during the regular season, then got upset in their second tournament game.

 

I'd have to look it up, but I'm fairly certain in 2007 it went: 20-0 regular season (with 13-0 league record), 2 sectional wins, 2 district wins, 2 region wins, 2 state wins.

 

Ohio's postseason is a mess to try to explain, but I grew up and played my HS sports there and covered most of Georgetown's run for the Ledger two years ago so I'll give it a shot.

 

It goes sectional, district, region, state. Depending on how many teams are in your sectional or how the draw goes, you could have to play 3 games to get through, or your first tournament game could be a sectional final. When you get to the district it's basically the round of 64 and you play two games there, region is the round of 16 and you play two games there. When you get to state there are only four teams left. Of course they do this across four divisions and have four champions, kind of like how Kentucky has six classes in football.

 

That's probably more than you were looking for but hopefully it helps out.

I wasn't sure how they do. So basically they just play 20 regular season games, is that a law from OSHAA? The postseason I never understood but that helps me understand.

 

I just know in KY that almost all teams will get in around 30 games.
