Ladies and gentlemen, it is once again that time of year for me to break out the Hensley Rating System for Kentucky high school football.

 

The Hensley Rating System is a simple system as it combines the power ratings from the Lexington Herald-Leader's Cantrall Ratings and the Louisville Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings. Once those two are combined, the average is then taken and that average is the number that is used in the HRS.

 

This is something that I have done for that last couple of years for the playoffs and attempted to do last year during the regular season but my school work came in the way of constantly posting it.

 

Some of you may agree with how the standings for each class and the state come out while there will be others that disagree and say that your team should be higher. Please remember that this is just the average of the Lit and Cantrall Ratings.

 

Also, this should NOT be considered an official BGP poll/ranking OR how I think teams should be ranked. This is just something that I like to do in my spare time.

 

So with all of that out of the way, here is the Top 15 Hensley Rating for Class 5A (previous ranking in parenthesis):

2. Bowling Green (2) 103.65

3. Owensboro (3) 97.55

4. Johnson Central (5) 95.05

5. John Hardin (4) 94.80

6. Christian County (7) 92.05

7. Oldham County (6) 91.85

8. Mercer County (8) 89.25

9. Doss (10) 87.90

10. Bryan Station (11) 87.45

11. Hopkinsville (9) 86.00

12. Covington Catholic (13) 86.00

13. Dixie Heights (14) 83.95

14. Ashland Blazer (12) 82.60

15. Woodford County (15) 81.65

How can Mercer be head of Hopkinsville when the tigers beat them at Mercer.

"It's the math thing.".... These are fun...and pretty good for comparing RELATIVE strengths of teams....but Litkenhous and Cantrell are EXTREMELY limited when it comes to ranking football teams because the seasons are so short. There's just not enough games to work the math out properly...

 

A similar issue involves Doss and John Hardin...Doss took apart John Hardin, but this puts them several spots below the Bulldogs...

 

It's just almost impossible to do mathematically-based rankings for football...

There are no voters. Like it says in the original post, the number that I use for each team is the AVERAGE of the Cantral Rating and the Lit Ratings. If something is wrong then the argument should be directed towards the power ratings in the Lexington Herald-Leader and the Louisville Courier-Journal.
