A great honor in remembrance of a great man and great coach.

RODDY NAMED BOWL LEGENDS HONOREE

Dick Roddy, the former head football coach for both Williamson and Belfry high schools, has been named as the 2008 Pike County Bowl Legends Award Recipient. When told that Roddy was to be honored with this award, Rod Varney, Belfry High School Principal and former player and assistant coach for Coach Roddy, said, “Coach Roddy was one of those individuals who I had the utmost respect for. The things he instilled in me and many other young men were those things of integrity, honesty, and work ethic that made us what we are today. These are things that you cannot put a price on.”

Coach Roddy left behind hundreds of young men who adored him as a mentor and confidant. As the pastor at his funeral stated, “Coach Roddy had two daughters and about 3500 sons.”

Nice story...hard to believe it took this long to select him for the honor.

I agree with the story. Great coach, an even better man.

Coach Roddy really made great strides with Belfry's football program and put us on the map in Ky football. I'm sure he would tell you that he didn't do anything for recognition or approval of anyone other then himself, his coaches and his players.

He was a great coach, but more importantly he was a positive influence on so many. Players, students, parents, boosters, teachers and everyone else who had contact with him quickly found out he was a man of integrity. He may not have always been "kinder and gentler", but he was always fair and consistent.

He is one of the people in my life that I can point to without question and say "He made me a better person".

There is no dought that coach Roddy belongs in the Hall of fame he is the standard that most players even to this day are measured, Could this young man have played for coach Roddy? that is still asked by alot of people in Belfry. Vipperman, Roddy and Haywood, that's why the standard is so hi in pirate country.
