This was in the paper. Evidently Taylor Payne threw the 5th and 6th. Then Blake Perry started the 7th. Taylor then reentered to finish the 7th.

Whats the rule? This is from the Advocate Messenger.

 

The game was played under protest as Masten wants a ruling whether Payne, who started the game at shortstop, was allowed to re-enter as a pitcher in the seventh.

 

"The only guy I knew you could re-enter to pitch was the starting pitcher," Masten said. "(Camic's) argument was he never left the game, which may be true. We just need to know.

 

"If I'm wrong, I need to know, and if I want to do that in my situation. I need to know I can do it. That's why I protested."

If he was taken out and came back in the same slot, I see no violation.

I thought the rule was that only the starting pitcher could re-enter as a pitcher, and any other pitcher can not re-enter once moved.

As long as he re-entered in the same batting slot, shouldn't be a problem.

 

The better question was whether he received warm-up pitches. That's a no-no for a pitcher that was already in the game. Masten should make that the basis of his protest if it in fact did happen.

They way I understand it he was never taken out of the game. Just went from short to pitch to short and back to pitch.

Thats fine too.

In high School

 

A starter or substitute can reenter pitching (not more than 1 time per inning) provided

1) he was not removed from pitching before the first batter he faced got on or made an out, or a third out was made.(ex picked off a runner)

2) The player who replaced him pitching did not require more than 8 warm up pitches

 

3) his team has not exceeded 4 defensive trips in a 7 inning game or exceeds 1 in an extra inning of a game. * note if a pitcher is removed it doesn't count against the limit of 4.
