SSF's 12th Region Statistical RoundUp..

Featured Replies

Last season, I would randomly do a thread on the statistics of the 12th Region teams -- for example: points per game, points given up, and win margin. Now it's back...

12th Region's Highest Scoring Offenses (PPG):

1. McCreary Central - 72.09

2. Lincoln County - 70.66

3. Mercer County - 67.47

4. Boyle County - 65.84

5. Rockcastle County - 65.40

6. Burgin - 64.64

7. East Jessamine - 63.50

8. Wayne County - 62.35

9. Somerset - 62.09

10. Casey County - 61.66

11. Pulaski County - 58.44

12. West Jessamine - 58.04

13. Garrard County - 57.34

14. Ky School for Deaf - 55.94

15. Danville - 54.84

16. Monticello - 52.00

17. Southwestern - 51.31

Thoughts:

McCreary Central's high shooting percentage from three-point range and free-throw line (last year #1 in state) helps them to the top of the board. Ironically, the #1 scoring team from two seasons ago is dead last, over 20 points behind this seasons leader. Somerset, often refered to as a high-scoring team is 9th with a hair over 62 points per game. Only two teams crack the 70 point barrier, and to no suprise, the best two teams in the region.

12th Region's Lowest Scoring Defenses (OPPG):

1. Ky School for Deaf - 47.82

2. West Jessamine - 52.00

3. Somerset - 54.80

4. Garrard County - 55.52

5. McCreary Central - 57.57

6. Burgin - 57.64

7. Pulaski County - 58.30

8. Lincoln County - 58.50

9. Wayne County - 59.85

10. Southwestern - 63.00

11. Mercer County - 63.05

12. Monticello - 63.73

13. Boyle County - 64.31

14. Casey County - 65.14

15. Danville - 66.89

16. Rockcastle County - 67.40

17. East Jessamine - 67.83

Thoughts:

West Jessamine obviously seems to be the best team to hold opponents to low scores (KSD is against other School for the Deaf teams (normally) out of state and only play twice in the region.) The top two teams in the region are both in the top 8, with McCreary at 5 and Lincoln at 8. Southwestern keeps their games low scoring, although they're getting beat by double digits on average. Pulaski County is winning be a hair.. really, a hair.

12th Region's Best Winning Margin (PPG/OPPG Difference):

1. McCreary Central - 14.52

2. Lincoln County - 12.16

3. Ky School for Deaf - 8.12

4. Somerset - 7.29

5. Burgin - 7.00

6. West Jessamine - 6.04

7. Mercer County - 4.42

8. Wayne County - 2.50

9. Garrard County - 1.82

10. Boyle County - 1.53

11. Pulaski County - 0.14

12. Rockcastle County - 2.00

13. Casey County - 3.48

14. East Jessamine - 4.33

15. Southwestern - 11.69

16. Monticello - 11.73

17. Danville - 12.05

* Negative score (give up more than make)

Thoughts:

Again, #1-2 in the region lead in winning margin, both winning by 12+ per game. Pulaski County wins by an exciting .14 per game, while Garrard and Boyle County both win by a layup.

I don't have much of one anymore, but heck, that just took twenty-five minutes.

If Rockcastle could learn to play some defense and have Thacker learn the game REALLY fast they could be dangerous. They can score with anyone, period. If the game becomes a shoot-out, Rockcastle has a chance with anyone in the 12th.

I just did some research and noticed that Rockcastle has only laid 2-3 real goose-eggs this season offensively and they all come off of disappointing losses:

Dec 21 North Laurel 74 - 77 (L)

Dec 22 Madison Central 41 - 92 (L)

They should have SPANKED North Laurel but I think everyone knows what happened this season at the North/South invitational  I am not a ref-blamer but ask MANY of the teams that went

Dec 23 Whitley County 69 - 80 (L)

Dec 27 South Laurel 41 - 59 (L)

This is meant as no disrespect to Whitley County, but nobody should lose to Whitley that bad on a neutral court. South Laurel is a good team but I was at that game and Rockcastle had a chance to win it. Credit S.L.'s defense, but Rockcastle was FLAT in that game.

That's interesting. The hangover effect happens with a lot of teams. In McCreary's two losses, they've come back and won by 24 and 12.

For some teams, it's motivation, for others, it's disappointment.

Very true, I think M.C. is because of the competitor that Watts is. It would be interesting to see his stat line on games after a loss. I bet the numbers are mind-boggling.

Why is it ironic? Southwestern has graduated everyone off the team from two years ago. Get us this year because we will be back towards the top next year.

It will take a drastic turnaround to be back on top next season. Give Shultz a few years to have this team competing again. I'm saying it's ironic because many coaches keep the same gameplan, and Shultz is a run-and-gun, shoot the three type of gameplan coach.

Many coaches keep the same game plan but Schulz isn't one of those. When you can go out and recruit players like in college, then you can recruit players that fit into your system. Then you can have the same system year in and year out. However in HS you have to play the cards that are delt to you. This years SW team cannot shoot the 3 consistantly and are totally different than the years with Fothergill, Edwards, and Dalton. Those teams were a special group that only comes along every now and again. If this years team tried to play that way we would get beat by an average of 30 points instead of 11. When you are undermanned ( as we are this year) the lower the number of possessions the better chance you have at an upset. That is probably the reason we rank last in scoring.

This year we have a group of players that haven't put the time in the gym and we are paying the price for it. But to say it will be a few years before we will be back is in my opinion crazy talk. We will return one of the better players in the region in Trevor Jones. Aaron Young with another year in the gym will be a nice high school player. Zack Fowler is only a freshman and will get better this summer. If Tyler Mayer works on his shot and becomes like Swiggert by next year he will be tough. The Epperson twins will be in the gym all summer maturing and improving. When TT Wooldrige shows up to play he is one of the best players in the gym. So while it will take a lot of hard work this summer, the future is bright for SW basketball.

Anyway back to the stats: Thanks for taking the time to do this. I for one appreciate it. McCreary and Lincoln both have Offensive firepower and are well coached. They are definately favorites to go to Rupp.
