Scheduled to participate: Manual, Central, Bishop Brossart, Holmes, Rockcastle County, Fort Campbell, Covington Holy Cross, Bath County, Mason County.

In an intersting sidebar, Casey Combest, the national high school record-holder in the indoor 60-meters (6.57) is making a comeback at age 27 and is scheduled to compete in the Open 55-meter dash prelims at 11:00AM. It is possible that an HBO crew (an HBO documentary on Combest's comeback is being developed) may be there to cover the event.

So I went today to the meet, I got there around 10:15 or 10:30 and they already had a relay race going on.

My first time going to any kind of track and field thing and the facility is REALLY impressive considering what it used to be. I was standing next to some Central coaches and they were REALLY impressed with it and they were surprised that no one else had done this before in regards to turning over an abandoned building into something like this.

They had shotput next to the track, they had a triple jump and high jump inside the center of the track.

A Mason Co boy won the 1600 meter. Casey looked amazing, it's unbelievable to think he is 27 and he looks that fast. He won both his races, I don't know if he raced a third time. There was a really nice ovation for him before and after the races. I believe he ran a 6.27 and a 6.25 in the 55 meter.

In regards to the HBO thing, I didn't talk to Casey, but there was a guy that came out with a camcorder and filmed his two races. He didn't have a film crew with him or anything that showed him with HBO, so who knows if this footage would end up in anything.

I would highly encourage anyone who is interested in track and field or if you are involved in a school, it's a great facility to compete in and watch the athletes.

Just a wonderful thing for the kids and everyone involved and congrats go to all those that made it happen. :thumb:

I thought things ran pretty smoothly for the first event of the season. And with the slate of meets, indoor track can be considered to actually have "a season" this year. Thing is, I think that indoor meets actually count towards the maximum number of meets allowed in the outdoor track season. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, and explain the logic if I'm right.

My favorite part of helping out with track meets is interacting with the participants. Special thanks from mcpapa go to CJ (high jumper from Fort Campbell), the entire Holmes boys track contingent (especially Mr. Palmer), and the lady competing in the Masters events. :thumb:

The reg below is from the KHSAA By Laws - Rule 25.

Beginning in 2008 there is no seperation between the indoor and outdoor track seasons. This change is a result of the lack of indoor facilities in Kentucky along with the potential for milder weather conditions in March in some parts of Kentucky.

Sec. 12) Sports Specifi c Limitations - Indoor and Outdoor Track

- Boys and Girls

1) Following the opening day of school, there shall be no organized

practice prior to December 1.

2) There shall be no more than two (2) practice meets held by each

team and such shall be held on or before the Monday of NFHS

calendar week 38.

3) The fi rst meet (indoor or outdoor) shall not take place before the

Monday of NFHS Calendar Week 28.

4) The track season shall consist of a maximum of nineteen (19)

meets. All meets, regardless of format or of being indoor or

outdoor meets, shall count against the limit of meets.

5) The opportunity to participate in regular season outdoor

contests season ends at all levels of play (grades 9-12) on the

day prior to the fi rst day for varsity level competition in KHSAA

sanctioned post-season events, with the exception that the

varsity team may practice and play through its elimination from

KHSAA sanctioned tournament play. Following elimination,

there shall be no further practice or play during the remainder

of the academic school year.
