Fleming 70 Lewis County 39

Fleming 70 Lewis County 39. Wow...that is more like a basketball score. Downing of Lewis County had 540 yards passing and J.T. Britt had 207 yards receiving on 10 catches. Sounds like to me if Lewis can find some depth they might be a dangerous team. Here is the Link to the story from the Ledger.

Panthers outscore Lewis County in shootout, 70-39

By CHUCK HAMILTON Sports Writer

FLEMINGSBURG -- Fleming County celebrated Homecoming Friday evening with a wild, wacky 70-39 shootout win over visiting border rival Lewis County at cool, crisp Panther Field.

The game, which turned into a nearly three-and-a-half hour marathon, featured numerous astounding offensive performances from members of both teams.

Lewis County junior quarterback Andy Downing was truly outstanding in defeat for the Lions, throwing for 540 yards, while being chased by Panther defenders and under heavy pressure all evening.

Downing's receivers continually made big plays and several short tosses were turned into long gains when the Lion pass catchers shook loose or got open behind the Fleming County defense.

His heroics were not enough to overcome the Panther offense, which mixed up the run and pass effectively, churning out 539 total yards and holding off Lewis County's upset bid.

The scoring began with a 23-13 first quarter, in favor of the hosts, who moved in front on their opening drive, which went eight plays and 63 yards, culminating with a two-yard run by Jacob Wallingford.

The Lions answered on their second possession after both teams went three-and-out, a rarity in this offensive showcase.

Downing found fullback Nathan Clark open and the 6-foot, 180-lb. senior did the rest, scoring from 84 yards away to knot the game.

Fleming County responded with a four-play drive that ended with a Tyler Newsom-to-Preston Dugan 26-yard score.

The quick-striking Lion offense came right back to score on its first play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive, a 60-yard scoring reception for J. T. Britt, who is the third-leading receiver in Kentucky. Britt had another outstanding game, hauling in 10 passes for 207 yards.

But the Panthers answered with another scoring drive to maintain control and ward off the Lions. Jacob Bell finished the drive with a four-yard scoring run and when the snap went awry, Bell, the Panther kicker, scooped the ball up and found Anthony Merrill alone in the end zone for the two-point conversion and a 23-13 Fleming lead.

The second quarter saw just one touchdown from each team and the Panthers held a 29-19 lead at intermission.

The Panthers extended their lead with a 27-6 third period that put the game on ice.

After Fleming County's Caleb Cannon scored on a 12-yard run, Downing and Britt were at it again, hooking up for a 94-yard touchdown, but the Panthers took control with four unanswered touchdowns to salt the game away.

Coach Gene Peterson was pleased with the win, but preferred to talk about the effort put forth by Lewis County.

"That Britt kid's a pretty good football player and makes plays and Lewis County never quits," Peterson said. "If they had more kids, they would really be dangerous. They have a very good coach in Brandon Combs and the Lewis County fans should be very proud of their kids and get behind that program. They play with a lot of heart but they just ran out of gas in the second half."

Peterson saw some aspects of the game he didn't like as well.

"We were disappointed in some missed tackles we had out there, especially early and we can't afford to do that," said Peterson. "We did run the ball well tonight and we did a good job of blocking."

The Panthers host West Carter next Friday and Lewis County entertains East Carter.

Lots of points in this game. From looking at the stats, it appears that Lewis needs a little more balance on offense (9 runs).

9 rushing attempts in one game? C'mon.

Anyways...Olive Hill is rooting for the Lions next week!

Sounds like there will be another half dozen or so fans rooting for the Lions next week.

Does Lewis line up in a 3 or 4 wide receiver set every time and just air it out? I think it is great that a team that only dresses 20 some players has a Coach that is trying something different and at least making the games interesting and fun for the players, so of Hal Mumme-esque. Keep it up Lions.
