Anyone who doubts that 43d District baseball is the best in the state needs to see a video of this game, which was between the 4th and 5th place teams in the district.

 

LCA pitched their #2 (a senior) and Lafayette pitched a junior who started the season as their #4 but probably ended up as their #2 as well. Lafayette's pitcher gave up 4 hits and 2 walks, and Lafayette made one error (which didn't lead to anything). Unfortunately for him, the two hits were a double and a single which were only interrupted by a fly ball out. That scored the only run of the game. Lafayette only got one hit, a double with one out in the 7th. LCA then walked Lafayette's #3 hitter intentionally and got the #4 hitter to ground into a game ending double play. LCA made no errors.

 

Both teams played good fundamental baseball and played the game with class and sportsmanship. Neither deserved to lose, but one had to. The Generals ended the year 20-14 (all of the teams in the 43d had 20 wins) with 10 of those 14 losses coming to teams in Lexington. LCA moves to 20-13 and plays Lexington Catholic tomorrow night. I dare say that either of these teams could qualify for the region in virtually any other district in the state, but it is quite possible that LCA will join Lafayette at home tomorrow night, and either Tates Creek or Dunbar will join them.

It is quite possible that the team that comes in SECOND in the 43rd could win the state championship. When the districts are all said and done, it will be interesting to see how many teams will be playing in regional tournaments that were beaten (and run ruled) by the teams that don't make it out of the 43d District tournament. I know of a couple already. The concentration of good teams in Fayette County along with the revising of the districts because of basketball has created a situation where the 11th region baseball tournament is almost guaranteed NOT to include the best 8 teams in the region, because those teams knock each other out before the regional even starts. If the eight schools in Lexington were spread out over 3 districts instead of two, it would better reflect the quality of the teams in the region. However, it would also probably mean 6 teams from Lexington in the regional almost every year, and I am not sure that the teams from the surrounding counties would be real happy at that result.
