North Middle sweeps Whitley Co (softball)

Featured Replies

The game was initially scheduled to be played at Whitley County, but was moved to North Laurel High due to the field conditions. Both middle school teams were without their #1 pitchers.

VARSITY

NLMS 16

WCMS 0

Torie Evans started the season 1-0 getting the win for NL and Ashley Lindsey took the loss for WC. The Lady Jags jumped on the Lady Colonels 5-0 in the first inning and never looked back. Scoring 6 more in the 2nd to go up 11-0 and 5 more in the 3rd. The game was called after 3 innings.

JV

NLMS 27

WCMS 1

Ferris Strong moved to 2-0 on the season getting the win for the Jags, Rachel Johnson took the loss for the Colonels. WCMS struck first going up 1-0 in the top half of the 1st inning. NLMS answered scoring 4 runs in the bottom half to take the lead 4-1 after 1. In the 2nd inning, the Lady Jags exploded for 23 runs to take a 27-1 lead. The game was called after the 2nd inning.

Both the North Laurel Middle School Varsity and JV teams moved to 2-0 each on the season.

So I take it that North Laurel Middles School calls the better team the Varsity team and the other the JV team...I've always heard Middles School teams be called the A Team and the B Team in baseball/softball....but whatever floats their boat.....

As far as the results of the NLMS games so far, does it really shock anyone that they're doing that even though they're that young???

Softball in Laurel County is just outstanding from top to bottom....that hasn't been more evident with North Laurel having the varsity success they've had at the state level and the Laurel County Little League teams that have made it to Regionals after winning the state competitions.

what happen to WC pitcher?

I think their #1 pitcher had an injured hand or leg. With her out, NL didn't use their #1 pitcher either. However, the 2 teams meet again on Friday evening at Whitley County (530pm varsity, jv to follow), and both should have their #1 pitchers available.

North does have a very solid program, as does South Laurel. The high school JV team actually starts 5 middle schoolers who don't play with the middle school (tonight against Lafayette they started 4 eighth graders and 1 seventh grader in the high school JV game, they did win 7-3). The middle school only has 3 eighth graders playing middle school ball. This is good for the girls to get experience against older girls as it prepares them better for the better competition.

They do take their softball serious here, that's for sure! I didn't realize that the first player ever inducted into the Ky Coaches HS Softball Hall of Fame was a girl from North Laurel who never played in a HS fastpitch game. Jennifer Baker Dagley and her family were part of the Title IV lawsuit to force KY high schools to begin playing fastpitch softball in 1994. The switch was made the next year in 1995. NLHS had Jennifer throw out the first pitch in the HS game tonight against Lafayette, and both the NL and Lafayette parents gave her a standing ovation. Jennifer was such a good athlete that she went on to play 4 years at LMU on scholly and her name is all over their record books. She is now a HS coach in Tennessee and was her district Coach of the Year in 2005.

The 2nd series between these two happened at Whitley County on Friday. Both teams were able to use their #1 pitchers in the varsity game. NL used their #3 in the JV game as #2 was out of town.

Here is an action shot from the game. Not sure who the Whitley batter is, but the North Laurel catcher is Alyssa Ryan.

is it me or does NL catcher stand a little but further back behind the plate than most catches?

Yes. But most of the Whitley batters where all the way back in the box. I think this one just moved up a little bit.
