We raised a little over $19,000 with a "phone-a-thon" or something like that. I can't remember the exact name of it.

Kids got together and sent 35 text messages with a link for an online donation. Then they turned around and called those same 35 people to let them know it was legit. Then they shared it on social media. The initial return was $12,000 in an hour. The company that did the online portion took 20% up until $10,000 was reached, then their cut for all of it dropped to 10%. On the first wave, we totaled about $14,000 and the other $5,000 came over the next 2-3 months from people who had seen it online but didn't have the money at the time or forgot about it until they saw their athlete around the holidays.

There's several of these companies out there. "Phone-a-thon," "moneydolly," etc

Some school systems don't like it, but if you are in one that does, it's effective. If a school system had half a gnat's brain, they'd do one fundraiser a year for the entire athletic department and could probably fund it all with one of those.
