Somerset at Russell County Updates

Wild start in Russell County.  The Lakers run a reverse on the opening kickoff and take it to the house. Then they inside kicked and recovered it.  Somerset forced a 3 and out. On Somerset's first play Cayden Cimala took a screen pass from Josh Bruner 70 yards for a touchdown. We're tied at 7 with 8 minutes to go in the first quarter.

Russell County drives it down to the Somerset 5 after a silly personal foul on Somerset extended the drive.  The Briar Jumpers force a field goal try, which is good. The Lakers lead 10-7 with 5:24 to go in the first.

Somerset fumbles on the first play of their second possession and the Lakers capitalize with a 37 yard pass from Loy to Gosser. Russell County leads 17-7.

Somerset then fumbles the ensuing kickoff and the Lakers take over at the Somerset 41.

Guy Bailey intercepts a Loy pass. However, Somerset fumbles again on the first play of the ensuing possession. Lakers have it in Jumper territory after Somerset's third lost fumble of the 1st quarter.

Somerset had a nice drive going.... Until they fumbled 2 more times. One went out of bounds but the other one was recovered by a Russell County. Somerset has fumbled 5 times in the first quarter and lost 4 of them, in addition to the onside kick.

One of the ugliest first quarters I have ever watched is finally over. It featured 5 turnovers, an onside kick recovered by the kicking team and a kickoff return touchdown. Russell leads 17-7 to start the 2nd quarter.

Somerset stops the Lakers on a 4th and 5 and drives it down the field in 5 plays for a touchdown.  The extra point was good.  Somerset made it look easy after they finally held onto the ball.  Lakers still lead 17-14 with 9:25 to go in the second quarter.

The Briar Jumpers tackle Russell for a loss on first down then come up with a big sack on second down.  The pass on 3rd and 22 is broken up.  Somerset takes over at their own 38.

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Somerset coaching staff and a blindside block penalty short-circuit a Jumper drive. Russell County still leads 17-14 with 5:22 to go in the half.

Somerset scores on their opening possession of the second half as they drive it down the field, on all running plays.  Kam Hughes finishes the drive with the touchdown. Somerset takes their first lead, 21-17 with 6:50 to go in the 3rd quarter.

This time the Lakers fumble. The quarterback seemed to just drop the ball on a rollout and Somerset recovers.

Kam Hughes makes Russell County pay for the fumble with a 31 yard touchdown run. The extra point is good.  Somerset extends their lead to 28-17. They've not had much difficulty with the Laker defense when they've held onto the ball.

After a Laker punt Somerset takes it right down the field again. This time Guy Bailey finishes it off with a 10 yard run.  The Briar Jumpers lead 34-17 with 1:20 to go in the 3rd quarter.

Russell County stays alive with a nice drive capped off with a 16 yard touchdown pass from Loy to Shearer.  Somerset still leads 34-24 with 8:00 to go in the game.
