Not a lot of games over the past week, but there were a few significant ones.    Oldham County’s victory over Collins and Grant County’s emphatic win over Walton-Verona highlighted a not-so-busy week….

As we close in on the final two weeks of the regular season, some thoughts on the upcoming post-season 8^th Region tournament…some observations as you try to figure out the eventual champion…

Of the last ten region champs….strong, or at least above-average, free throw shooting proves to be a huge indicator of post-season success.

People have heard me harp on free throw shooting for years.   It just makes logical sense - that free throws' importance rises in the post-season.   I decided, however, to do the research.   Has it really panned out that way?   Have the better free throw shooting teams actually had greater region tournament success?   Well....

…9 of the last 10 region titlists shot free throws better than average from the stripe (66.7%) for the season.   Seven of those nine also shot better than 66.7% during the actual district and region tournaments.

The only exception to this rule came in 2019, when Walton-Verona won the region, despite shooting well below average at the line, hitting just 60.8% for the season.

The best free throw shooting teams to win the region over the last ten years…. South Oldham (2016) 77.5%, Oldham County (2021) 75.5%, Collins (2020) 73.1%, Collins (2015) 71.6%, and South Oldham (2013) 70.8%.   

Over the last two seasons in particular, tournament free throw shooting prowess has come in handy: Collins (2020 champs) at 76.8% and Oldham County (2021) at 75.4% posted the best post-season numbers (district and region tournaments) of any 8^th Region champs in the last decade.

 A strong start is often a good harbinger of late season success…although a strong finish to the regular season is always coveted by coaches, the reality is that 9 of the last 10 region champs showed their chops early by winning at least 7 of their first 10 regular season games.    Only the 2015 Collins titleists failed to do so, finishing 6-4 over their first ten games.    This year, four teams meet both of these two “Litmus Tests”:

On to the rankings.   As always, the game schedule times are assumed to be 7:30 pm unless noted.

1 - Woodford County (#13 Bluegrasspreps)– (20-5)   Woodford has lost three out of their last four games after falling, 68-59, to Evangel Christian in the Ed Stepp / WCHS Classic in Frankfort last week.     But the tale of the tape isn’t really so bad – those losses came by 1 point to #12 ranked Henry Clay on the road, by one point to highly-regarded district rival Collins on the road, and then by just nine points to Evangel.

The loss to Evangel was Woodford’s worst defeat of the season.

Woodford has still posted an impressive body of work against a pretty tough schedule that has featured five games against four ranked teams (they played Henry Clay twice), and the Jackets came out of those games with three victories.     The rest of the schedule has been pretty light, but Woodford has taken care of business and is the only 8^th Region team with 20+ wins.  

Although Woodford hardly impresses at the line (64.6%; see above commentary), they check a number of other boxes:   strong, mobile inside players, tremendous team shooting from the floor, and a veteran, capable point guard to run the show.   Multiple players are capable of scoring, and Woodford averages just shy of 70 points a game, while the defense is the stingiest in the 8^th Region, allowing just 51.5 ppg.

Despite the #1 region ranking – and being the only team in the 8^th ranked in the BluegrassPreps.com Top 20 – Woodford will almost certainly get the #2 seed in the 30^th District, forcing a rematch against the sharp-shooting Spencer County Bears, who just missed out on defeating Woodford by one point in overtime earlier this year.

Woodford stays number one this week in the rankings.

This week:

2/8 – vs West Jessamine     2/10 at Central Hardin

 

2 - North Oldham (13-8)  North stumbled last week in a 65-57 loss to DeSales, shooting just 43.1% in the loss.    The Mustangs, however, stay put at #2.   North has played a brutal schedule – third toughest in the region – and fared well against it.    Most impressively, they’ve fared well despite their top six players all being underclassmen and despite playing shorthanded since mid-December.

With Jack Fischer rejoining the lineup last week, North is – for the first time since Week Two – back to 100%, personnel-wise.

North can claim the #1 seed in the 29^th District Monday night with a district seeding victory over South Oldham.   Since D29 is currently a 3-team district, gaining the #1 seed would give North an automatic berth in the 8^th Region tournament.

Even if North falls to South, they will claim the #1 seed via the 3-way tiebreaker IF South beats them by less than 3 points.    

North is the only remaining undefeated team against 8^th Region competition at 3-0.   Although the Mustangs haven’t played many region games, they have played some of the better region competition, owning wins over Oldham County, Simon Kenton, and Walton-Verona.    This week, they will face two more quality region opponents in South Oldham and Grant County.

3 – Oldham County (Collins (15-6)    Oldham County and Collins always entertain on the basketball court.   Although Oldham holds a decided 13-4 advantage in the all-time series, nine of the 17 games have been decided by 8 points or less – and when it comes to crunch time in the region, Oldham’s advantage over Collins is just 4-3.

Last week’s collision in Shelbyville was pretty typical.    Collins’ defense kept the points to a premium, but in the end, it was Oldham’s superior shooting ability that carried the day, as Oldham shot 57.1% from the floor to just 41.7% for Collins.    One of the region’s super-sophomores, Max Green, led the way for Oldham, scoring 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting (including 4 of 6 beyond the arc).

By virtue of the road win over Collins, OC and Collins flip spots this week, with the defending champs moving into the #3 slot.

Oldham sports the largest average victory margin in the region.   The Colonels are #5 in scoring at 64.9 ppg and #5 in scoring defense at 55.4 ppg, giving them an average victory margin of 9.5 ppg.

Oldham has no control over its final seeding in the 29^th district; the Colonels can only sit and wait for the outcome of Monday’s South Oldham vs. North Oldham clash in Goshen.    However, the Colonels can still claim the #1 seed in the 29^th – and the automatic “bye” to the district finals, meaning an automatic “bye” to the 8^th Region if South wins the game by at least 3 points, but no more than 8 points.   (The 3-way tiebreaker in the 29^th is determined by overall victory margin among the teams.)

4 – Collins (16-5)    Chris Gaither’s squad is setting up for a big run at a possible third region title in just six years.

The Titans are the only Region 8 team to defeat Woodford County, and their two region losses were to powerful teams from Oldham County (by 3) and Spencer County (by just one). 

In fact, Collins’ last four losses on the season have come by just 5 points, 4 points, 1 point, and 3 points.

Oldham’s 55 points against the Titans was the most Collins has surrendered in the last five games – against strong competition that included Bullitt East, Boyle County, and Woodford County.

If Spencer County is upset by Anderson County this week, Collins gets the #1 seed in District 30 by virtue of their win over Woodford County, banishing the Yellowjackets and Spencer County Bears to battle in the opposite bracket.    Even if Spencer defeats Anderson – the final district 30 seeding game – creating a 3-way tie atop the 30^th between Woodford, Collins, and Spencer, the Titans still likely get the #1 seed, as the tiebreaker for a 3-way tie in the 30^th is determined by the RPI index.    Collins, at .63026 is currently about .01 ahead of Woodford County; in fact, Collins has the top RPI in the entire region.

This week, the Titans face their usual tough schedule.

2/8 at St. Xavier     2/10 vs. Shelby County 8 pm     2/12 at Trinity

 

5 – Spencer County (14-8)    The Bears got a solid win last week in their only game, 79-67, over South Oldham as coach Jason Burns got one over his former mentor, Steve Simpson.   The Bears – who have been one of the state’s most prolific three point shooting teams this year – hit 13 of 29 threes for 44.8%, while shooting over 48% from the floor overall.

A 33-19 advantage on the glass sealed the deal for Spencer.

Sophomore Luke Erhardt had 35 points to lead the Bears, and hit 7 of 12 attempts from beyond the arc.   Jonathan Combs finished with a big double-double (20 points / 14 rebounds), and Camden Cox added 15.

Luke Erhardt is rapidly becoming a name everyone in the region should know.  This was his second 30+ point game in his last four, and his third 30 point game this season.   Erhardt is averaging 22.3 ppg, but he’s averaging nearly 27 ppg over the last eight contests.   He has been the Bears’ leading scorer in each of the last 9 games.    A versatile scorer, he’s already hit 67 threes at a 39.0% clip, and is a devastating 78.7% at the  line, where he’s 111 of 141. 

Spencer can forget a 3-way tie atop the district with a win over Anderson County this week, but the three-way tiebreaker favors Collins and Woodford County, who are 1-2 atop the region in terms of RPI standings.

This week:   2/7 vs. Anderson County     2/8 at North Hardin   2/12 at Eminence

 

6 – Grant County (16-8)   The Braves are one of the hottest teams in the region right now, having won 8 of their last 11 games.

Last week, Grant County earned the #1 seed in the 32^nd district, finishing 4-0 in seeding play, as they got a convincing 90-74 win over Walton-Verona.   The Braves won thanks to tremendous shooting:   64% from the floor overall, 9 of 17 (53%) beyond the arc, and 25 of 30 (83.3%) at the line.  Dylan Hammonds had (another) double-double, with 27 points / 13 rebounds.

Although the Braves ended the week on a low note, falling to an 18-win Great Crossing team, 65-53, they will be favored to advance to the 8^th Region tournament in New Castle, and if their performances against fellow region contenders is any indication, they will be a difficult out.

Grant County last won the region in a magical 1979 campaign.   The Braves 8^th region victories (over Simon Kenton and Walton-Verona) and narrow losses (to Woodford County by 3 and Oldham County by 6) would suggest that this year’s squad may have the moxie to make a serious run.

This week:   2/9 at North Oldham     2/11 vs. Shelby County 8 pm     2/12 vs. Breathitt County

 

7 – Simon Kenton (10-10)   The Pioneers kind of defy definition right now.   The reality is that Trent Steiner’s club is barely sitting at .500 on the season, and averaging just 55.9 ppg, third-worst in the region.  The Pioneers haven’t had a winning streak of any length since winning three in a row in mid December (over South Oldham, Muhlenberg County, and Conner).  

But…

SK has faced – by far – the toughest competition of any team in the region this year, with their opponents holding a winning percentage of nearly 65%.   And against that competition, SK has given yup only 57.6 ppg, good enough for sixth-best in region 8.

The Pioneers have shot – against formidable competition – 48% from the floor, one of the region’s best averages.

Simon Kenton has faced #10 Greenwood, #7 Lexington Catholic, #9 PRP, #20 Cooper, and #19 Dixie Heights, plus formerly ranked teams Highlands and Walton-Verona.   The Pioneers lost 6 of those 7 games (defeating only Walton-Verona), but four of the six losses were decided by 9 points or less.   The bottom line is that the Pioneers have consistently been competitive with the best in the state.

So where to rank SK?   For now, they stay here.   SK has losses to Oldham County, Grant County, and North Oldham, and ironically, these unranked schools beat SK more easily than the ranked teams, as Oldham beat SK by 18, and Grant and North both recorded 12 point wins.

Simon Kenton gets three straight home games this week against some quality competition; it’ll give the Pioneers a chance to build some momentum prior to the district tournament.

This week:   2/7 vs. Gallatin County     2/8 vs. Campbell County     2/11 vs. Scott High

 

8 – Walton-Verona (11-10)     Walton has certainly fallen since opening the year at 4-0 and getting ranked.   Currently riding a 3-game losing skid, the Bearcats will have a dogfight now to get out of the 32^nd district, as W-V will face SK in the first round of the district tournament.

This past week, Walton-Verona lost their only game, a 90-74 decision to Grant County.  

Brant Smithers (21.9 ppg), Cameron Christy (17.3 ppg), and Carter Krohman (12.0 ppg) lead the team.  

The odd aspect to this team has been the free-throw shooting.   Despite being composed of pretty much the same players from last year’s squad, which shot free throws well, Walton is struggling to hit the freebies, connecting on just 62.6% of their free throws this season.

Walton will have a challenging week ahead as they try to get back on track.

9 - South Oldham (9-11)   South continues to be competitive with everyone, but the Dragons are still hovering around the .500 mark after going 1-1 last week, with a 96-48 win over Carroll County and a 79-67 loss to Spencer County.

Rebounds derailed the Dragons against Spencer, as the Bears owned a 33-19 advantage on the glass.

South placed six players in double figures against Carroll, led by freshman reserve Julian Miles’ 16.   The Dragons hit 59.3% from the floor, and nailed 16 of 34 threes.

But against Spencer, the team hit half as many threes – 8 – in 29 teams (27.6%).    Ben Michel led the way with 24 points in the loss.

The Dragons can still eke out the #1 seed in district 29 if they can defeat North Oldham on Monday in the final district seeding game.    If South wins by more than 8 points, they will claim the #1 seed by virtue of the 3-way tiebreaker.

South has an insanely challenging week ahead, with four games – three on the road – against top-tier competition.

10 - Owen County (14-8)   Owen County has pretty much dominated the 31^st district this year.   Holding an unblemished 8-0 district mark with two games to go in seeding play (both against Eminence), the Rebels have the upper hand in the race for the #1 seed and a favorable draw on the road to New Castle.

Owen had a surprisingly close shave with a one-win Carroll County team last week, winning 62-58 as the Panthers put up quite a fight.

The Rebels were playing without Player of the Year candidate Teagan Moore, who sat out with a minor injury.   

In Moore’s absence, 6’8” sophomore center Brax Ward stood up and put together his best game of the season, posting 27 points (11 of 14 shooting) and grabbing 10 rebounds.   Lincoln Cobb added 16 and Isaac Wash 13 as the Rebels got their 14^th win of the season.

The Rebels have now won 6 of their last 7 games., including a 13 point victory over Spencer County, and a 25 point win over Gallatin County.   Their only loss during that stretch was a 7 point overtime loss to Grant County.

The Rebels are second only to Oldham County in Region 8 average victory margin.   Owen is averaging 61.1 ppg, while possessing the region’s #2 scoring defense at 52.4 ppg, for an average victory margin of 8.7 ppg.

The Rebels can wrap up the #1 district seed this week – and perhaps get a little revenge for the All-A 8^th Region final loss to Walton-Verona…

This week:

2/7 at Eminence     2/9 vs. Walton-Verona     2/10 at Williamstown     2/12 vs. Anderson County

 

11 – Gallatin County (13-7)    Gallatin County stays put at #11 this week after an 80-70 win over district foe Trimble County last week.

The Wildcats are 7-3 since the New Year.

Mason Arnold led the way with 15 points / 16 rebounds, Drake Skidmore had 15, and Logan Riddle 14 in the win.    It was Arnold’s third-straight game with double-figure rebounds.

Gallatin County continues to be one of the region’s most balanced teams, with four players – Drake Skidmore (14.8 ppg), Kellen Dossett (12.9), Ashton Gullion (10.1 ppg), and Logan Riddle (10.9 ppg) – averaging in double digits, and Mason Arnold averaging 8.8 ppg.

Gallatin County will embark on four challenging games this week, with three road games.

12 – Shelby County (6-15)   Shelby may be putting it all together here late.    

The Rockets move up two in the rankings to #12…

The Rockets made it two wins a row – their first winning streak of the season – as they defeated Anderson County, 59-51, last week.   The win came on the heels of a 53-48 victory over Bourbon County on 1/29.

Kyre Bishop led the way against the Bearcats with 20 points and 8 rebounds.   Shelby hit 20 of 26 at the line (76.9%) to ice the victory.

Shelby is still a work in progress; the Rockets are hitting just 41% from the field and 62.9% at the line.   They face an uphill battle in a loaded 30^th district that features Spencer County, Woodford County, and Collins.   But Shelby is showing the potential for a late-season surge.

This week:  2/8 at North Bullitt     2/10 at Collins 8 pm      2/11 at Grant County 8 pm    

 

13 – Henry County (8-13)    Henry played once last week, and got a bit of revenge on their cross-county rival, Eminence, with a 62-54 victory.

Kevin Wix with 24 points led the Wildcats; Sam Royalty had another double-double with 18 points / 15 rebounds, and Peyton Amyx tied his season-high with 14 points in the win.

Coming on the heels of a 73-44 pasting of Whitefield Academy, Henry County has their first winning streak since last year.   Much like Shelby County, the Cats may be starting to hit their stride late.

Henry County has been led all year by senior guard Kevin Wix, who has led the Cats in scoring in every game.   Wix, averaging 24.3 ppg, has been one of the region’s most electric – and improved – scorers over last season.    He’s eclipsed the 30-point mark five times this season, with a high of 39 points against Frankfort Christian.  

6’6” center Sam Royalty is averaging a double-double (14.7 ppg / 12.7 rebounds) and has recorded seven consecutive double-doubles – and 18 total double-doubles on the season.   He’s collected 17 rebounds in two different games.

The trick for Henry continues to be the supporting cast.    Coinciding with Henry’s recent uptake seems to be the play of Peyton Amyx, a junior who is only averaging 6.9 ppg on the season, but who has posted back-to-back double figure scoring games with 14 against Eminence and 13 against Whitefield.    He’s averaged 8.4 ppg over the last seven contests.    If Amyx can emerge as a consistent third option scorer for Henry…

Over the past 7 games, the trio of Wix, Royalty, and Amyx has accounted for 81.5% of Henry County’s scoring.

This week:   2/8 vs. Gallatin County 8 pm     2/10 vs. Western Hills or Trimble County     2/11 vs. Highlands Latin     2/12 at Walton-Verona

 

14 – Eminence (11-6)     The Warriors have certainly rekindled the excitement in Eminence.    Eminence has already equalled its number of wins from the last two years, combined, and 11 wins is more than any Warrior team since the 2018 team went 15-15.

This team can continue to make noise, but it suffered a setback last week with a 62-54 loss at home to arch-rival Henry County.  No stats were available as of this writing.

At 5-4 in district play, Eminence appears destined to be the #3 seed come 31^st district tournament time.   It looks to be almost certain that the Warriors will be in the bracket with a first round matchup against Henry County and a potential semi-final matchup against Gallatin County in order to reach the district finals and a berth in the region tournament.

While daunting, Eminence would appear to be a legitimate dark horse candidate to pull that off.   The Warriors are 1-1 against Henry County, and – although the Warriors are 0-3 against Gallatin this year – Eminence played the Wildcats tight in a 12 point loss early in the year, and were very competitive in the 8^th Region All-A tournament, losing by 20 after being competitive for three quarters, and playing without their leading scorer.

Though Eminence has faced the region’s weakest schedule, that shouldn’t detract from the significant improvement we’ve seen in Eminence this year.  And the Warriors have a legitimate shot of equalling the 15-game win total from 2018 before the season is out.

This week:  2/7 vs. Owen County     2/8 at Carroll County     2/10 vs. Brown     2/12 vs. Spencer County

 

15 – Williamstown (9-12)     The Demons fall a couple of spots this week after dropping a 71-59 decision to district rival Simon Kenton last week.

No stats are available yet.

The loss extended the Demons’ current losing streak to four games; Williamstown has dropped 7 of its last 8 games.

Better times may be ahead for this youthful squad…..Williamstown figures to be favored – or at least very competitive  - in at least six of their final seven regular season games.   Win all six and the Demons will have the most wins in Jacob Cheesman’s short 3 year time at Williamstown (Cheesman’s first team in 2019-20 won 14 games).   More importantly, the Demons will have accomplished “Job 1” in the Cheesman multi-year agenda for his team; six wins would put the Demons at 15-13 at the end of the regular season and guarantee just the second winning season in the last 16 years in Williamstown.

This week – 2/7 vs. Heritage Academy     2/10 vs. Owen County     2/11 at Carroll County     2/12 vs. Trimble County

 

16 -  Anderson County (4-15)   It’s been a long, rough year for Anderson County head coach Bryan Hyatt.

Anderson fell again last week, dropping a close 59-51 decision to longtime rival Shelby County in Shelbyville. 

The loss extended the region’s longest losing streak to ten games.

Bryce Snellen continues to have a superb year in Lawrenceburg, averaging 20.1 ppg and 11.1 rebounds.   The senior is hitting 55.4% of his shots.    But nobody else on the roster is averaging in double figures, and the rest of the team is hitting just 40.7% from the floor.

Six of the games in the current losing streak have been decided by ten points or less, but Anderson’s free throw shooting has made winning the close ones difficult as the team is hitting just 58% at the stripe.

Counting out the Bearcats come district tournament time, however, might be a fatal mistake.    Tradition runs deep in Lawrenceburg, and Bryan Hyatt is a veteran coach.    Further, as a friend once said, “seniors don’t want to play that last game”.   There are seven seniors on this Bearcat squad who will not go quietly into the night come tournament time.

This is a crazy-busy week for the Cats, as they play five games, including one today in the PrepSpin Classic.

This week:    2/6 (today)  at Mercer County (PrepSpin Classic)     2/7 at Spencer County     2/8 at Oldham County     2/10 vs. Garrard County     2/12 at Owen County

 

17 – Trimble County (6-18)     Trimble fell in their only game last week, losing 80-70 to Gallatin County.   The Raiders have lost 11 of their last 13 games as we head into the final two weeks of the regular season.

The Raiders kept it competitive by shooting 52% from the floor; Hunter Kelly put up 20 points to lead five Raiders in double figures.   In fact, those five players scored all 70 of Trimble’s points.    Ethan Horn had 17 points, Tate Ogburn 12 (plus 8 rebounds), J.T. Wilcoxson had 11, and Dalton Penick scored 10.

A poor night at the line – Trimble hit just 13 of 29 free throw attempts – doomed the Raiders.

After a promising close to 2020-1, Trimble was expected to be more competitive this year, with some experienced talent back, and playing their third year under coach Marcus Mumphrey.    But it never came together for the Raiders, and now the team will seek to try to build some momentum over the final two weeks before heading into 31^st district play.

This week:  2/9 vs. St. Francis 6 pm     2/10 at Henry County     2/12 at Williamstown

 

18 – Carroll County (1-21)    Carroll fell twice last week, losing to South Oldham, 96-48, on Monday, and 62-58 to Owen County on Tuesday.

No stats are available for Carroll for either game.

It’s been a tough year for the Panthers as Doug Oak has endeavored to remake the program.     The Panthers, however, have a lot of games on tap (seven) over the final two weeks to try to right the ship heading into the post-season.

This week:   2/8 vs. Eminence     2/11 vs. Wiliamstown     2/12 vs. Pendleton County  2:30 pm

To synopsize the above:

29th District:   North Oldham wins the #1 seed if they defeat South Oldham on 2/7 OR if South defeats North by less than 3 points.

Oldham County wins the #1 seed if South beats North by 3-8 points.

South wins the #1 seed if South beats North by more than 8 points.

30th District:   Collins appears to have the #1 seed locked.   If Anderson County beats Spencer County this week, Collins edges Woodford by virtue of head-to-head.

If Spencer County beats Anderson, creating a 3-way tie, the team with the highest RPI claims the #1 seed.   At this moment, that would be Collins.

31st District:   Owen County has the #1 seed locked up with an 8-0 district seeding mark.   Even if Eminence were to upset Owen County - twice - in the final two weeks, and Gallatin County were to tie things up with an identical 8-2 district mark, Owen would still get the #1 seed by virtue of their 2-0 seeding mark against Gallatin.

32nd District:  Grant County has the #1 seed with a perfect 4-0 district mark.

As per usual, really thorough treatment here, Mike.  Thanks.  I had sort of got it in my head over time that there was a clear division in this Region between the top 4 (OC, North Oldham, Collins, Woodford County), and that within that top 4, there was a clear number 1 (Woodford) and then the other 3 followed in some order.  I say all that even though I've not seen Woodford County even for 5 minutes.  But the results this week don't point to that kind of neat delineation between the teams.  Then after those 4 there are 5 more teams (6?  7?) that are pretty even, and it just depends on how they might look on a given night against a given opponent.  That much is probably still true.  I will say that Spencer County looked very good against South Oldham last week.  Maybe we just caught them on a good night, or maybe it's a bad matchup for South, or maybe Burns knows Simpson's stuff so well since he was under him so long that he's well positioned to counter it.  I don't know - whatever it was, they looked pretty good that night.
