January is almost over and the 6th region tournament is shaping up to be one to remember - let's see what's shaking this week in the 6th!!

 

1.  Western (17-3)  The Warriors reclaim the top spot after knocking off J-town at J-town in a rematch of their LIT game.  Jr. G Trent Hinkle leads the team in scoring at 14.6ppg, and is starting to earn some Region POY buzz. Julius Edmonds and fr. Kaden Magwood are also main contributors (both 12ppg) on this deep and very athletic team.  They tend to suffocate opponents with their speed and length inside.  Next up for Western is Seneca on 1/28

2.  Jeffersontown (13-6)  Heavy is the head that wears the crown!  J-Town went 1-2 last week - highlighted by a Western loss in their match-up on 1/18.  The Vasser brothers (sr. Will 14.1ppg and so. Dre 13.1ppg) have been leading the way for the Chargers, but F Lavonte Harris, G Terrall Cleaves and W Xavier Price all chip-in, averaging around 10ppg.   They have the athleticism and depth to give any team trouble.  J-town will next face Manual in an intriguing cross-region match-up on 1/25

3.  PRP (15-4)  The Panthers have rebounded nicely from their LIT disappointment with some nice wins.  PRP has an impressive 3-man attack with jr. PG Zee McCown (18.4ppg), jr. F Keith Robinson (18.1ppg), and sr. C Vic Lado (14.1ppg).  Jr. G Greg Cole has also asserted himself lately, contributing at 10.pg and taking pressure off of McCown at the point. The Panthers struggle with lack of depth on the bench some games, but their starting 5 (6 when Dixon is healthy) can play with anyone.  PRP next travel to Holy Cross on 1/28.

4. Iroquois (16-3)  The  Raiders continue to rise in the rankings - they had a HUGE win at Butler this week in district play.  The Q is  paced by sr. Davion Burton (13.4ppg), but jr. Jordan Williamson (11.8ppg) is among FOUR starters that average double digits. They next host Shawnee on 1/27.

5. Doss (15-7)   The Dragons are lead by the strong duo of sr.'s Inslee Carroll (18.7ppg), Tony Moss (16ppg).  They have an experienced squad and will likely stay in the top 5 most of the season.  Next up for Doss is a big district game vs. Butler on 1/28.

6. Butler  (13-9) The Bears, coming off of making the LIT final, had a rough week - losing to both Manual and Iroquois.  Mershon Dickerson (1767ppg), Julion Beard (11.6ppg), and Chavez Woods (12.0ppg) lead Butler in scoring.  The Bears travel to Doss for a BIG district match-up on 1/28

7. Southern  (11-7) The Trojans went 1-1 this week.  The Trojans are led by sr. G Cam Pfiester (18.9ppg) and jr.  Xavier Shobe (12.0ppg).  Next up for the Trojans is a date with J-town on 1/27.

8. Evangel  (8-7)  The Eagles have used the all A classic to find their rhythm.  Guards Christian Spalding (13.2ppg) and Kyran Tilley (11.4ppg) are pacing Evangel so far, w/ jr. C Cyr Malonga controlling the middle.  The Eagles next play KCD in the All A State tourney on 1/27.    

9. Fern Creek (8-12)  The Tigers continue to play a very tough schedule - losing this week to Ballard and J-town.  As expected, sr. Darian Lewis is pacing FC at 16.1ppg, and fellow sr. G Jaden Schooler is at 13.7ppg.  They next host Greenwood on Feb 4.

10. Bullitt East  (10-8)  The Chargers went 1-1 for the week, and had a nice upset win over CAL  Sr. Tucker Blandford is the leader of BE (15.9ppg) but jr. G Nolan Davenport is chipping in at 12.2ppg.  Up next for BE is a home game vs. Waggener on 1/28

11. DeSales (8-10)    DeSales is another team that plays a difficult schedule. The Colts currently have a balanced attack, with 4 players averaging double figures (Carter Bischoff leads team at 15.9ppg)  They next at CAL on 1/28.

12. Fairdale (10-11)   So.'s Jacob Tucker(18.7ppg) and Dalton Hicks (18.6ppg) give Fairdale a solid 1-2 punch.  Up next is Atherton on 1/28.

13. Bullitt Central  (15-6)  Senior Hunter Coleman is leading BC at 23ppg. (made all LIT team) 

14. Holy Cross  (10-9) so. F Jacob Hand is leading HC is scoring at 21.3ppg. 

15.  Beth Haven (15-4) Sr. F Luka Mateski is averaging a team high 24.9ppg (leads the region).  

16. Valley (3-19) 

17. North Bullitt (5-13)

18.  Moore (3-15)

19. Whitefield Academy (6-12)

Two teams I thought may be higher in the rankings by this time in the season are Evangel and DeSales.  Are both dealing with injuries?

I thought so as well.  From the outside looking in, it seems that Evangel had a rough start with all the new players, but might be rounding into form.

I don't know what to tell you about Desales.  They play almost everyone close, but have few quality wins to show for it.
