Newport Central Catholic 76 Augusta 60

Recommended Posts

Newport Central Catholic hosted the Augusta Panthers from the 10th Region tonight and picked up the “W” in what was a close game for just about one half.

The Breds struck first taking an 11-2 lead, but the 3 ball started dropping for the Panthers and the 1st quarter ended with the Breds up 17-16. Joel Iles for the NewCath probably had at least 11 of those first quarter 17 points

The 2nd period stayed nip and tuck with the Panthers keeping close again by the benefit of the 3, and the Breds went into halftime with a 32-30 lead.

Luck ran dry in the 3rd quarter for the Panthers as a lid was placed on the basket with NewCath taking full advantage with Iles getting a hot hand, and they won that 3rd period by a bunch 25-14, making it 57-44.

The Panthers tried to cut into that lead in the 4th, but could never quite overcome as the Breds continued to answer every attempt.

Final NewCath 76 Augusta 60

Joel Iles ended the night with 29 for the Breds.

NewCath travels tomorrow night to Bracken County to take on the Polar Bears.

Correction: It was 32-30 at the half. I fumbled and put 20 when I meant to put 30.

The Panthers got off to a slow start before working back into the game early on and looked good in the first half. But, I hate when there’s a but, they dug a hole in the 3rd quarter they just couldn’t get out of. Kason Hinson had a nice night with 26 points and Riley Mastin added 13. The loss dropped the Panthers to 8-5 and they are back in action tonight vs. Campbell County at Augusta, travel to Bath County on Thursday and back home to face Mason County on Saturday night.
