Girls Top 5

1. Clay County (1-0)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Tigers dropped a game this past week to Pike County Central, but still managed to pull out an 80-64 win over Rockcastle County Tuesday.

Surprise, surprise: The Lady Tigers don’t dodge anyone. Clay County hosts Iroquois Saturday before traveling to play in the Fifth Third Bank Prime Time Classic next week.

What’s ahead: Take a look above. Things aren’t getting any easier for James Burchell’s squad.

2. Whitley County (3-0)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Colonels remain at the No. 2 spot despite blowing a big lead at South Laurel last week.

Surprise, surprise: It amazes me to see Whitley County struggle early in games. The Lady Colonels have a lot of talent, but can’t seem to find any chemistry at times.

What’s ahead: Whitley County has a tough challenge Friday against unbeaten Casey County (5-0).

The Lady Rebels have already beaten South Laurel and will give Larry Anderson’s squad a tough game.

After that game, Whitley County will participate in the Berea Holiday Classic next week.

3. North Laurel (5-1)

What’s the scoop: Roy Bowling’s squad suffered their first loss this past week against Perry County Central, but North Laurel is still a solid team.

The Lady Jaguars have a big road game Friday against Jackson County that will show Bowling just how good his team is.

Surprise, surprise: I really wasn’t surprised to see North Laurel lose 57-43 to the Lady Commodores.

I might have the Lady Jaguars rated a tad bit too high because they are young, but remember, they are also talented.

What’s ahead: I’ve already mentioned North Laurel’s game against Jackson County Friday and after that game, Bowling’s squad will participate in the First Priority Tri-State Basketball Classic next week.

4. Corbin (4-1)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Redhounds have proved many skeptics wrong this season, including myself.

Jennifer Parsons’ squad is talented and very good.

Surprise, surprise: The Lady Redhounds will participate in the Berea Holiday Classic next week.

What’s ahead: Corbin will participate in the Berea Invitational next week.

5. South Laurel (2-2)

What’s the scoop: This team is hard to figure out.

In all honesty, the Lady Cardinals should have lost to Whitley County last week, but should have beaten Corbin.

I just don’t know which team is going to show up.

Surprise, surprise: I was really surprised South Laurel blew a 17-point lead against Corbin.

It looked as if the Lady Cardinals had the game in hand, but the Lady Redhounds never quit, thus leading to South Laurel’s disappointing loss.

What’s ahead: South Laurel will join Corbin and Whitley County next week in the Berea Holiday Classic.

The Best of the Rest

No. 6 Barbourville (3-2)

What’s the scoop: I’m telling you folks, Brandon Hillard’s squad could be the sleeper of the 13th Region. The Lady Tigers dropped a 41-38 heartbreaker to a very good McCreary Central team last week at home.

Watch out for Barbourville.

No. 7 Jackson County (2-0)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Generals didn’t play this week, so I moved them up a spot to No. 7.

No. 8 Bell County (2-2)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Bobcats have been playing up-and-down, but they’re still good enough to be at the No. 8 spot.

No. 9 Harlan (3-2)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Green Dragons are winners of two straight. Welcome to the Top 10 Harlan.

No. 10 Evarts (4-3)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Wildcats remain at the No. 10 spot for the second week in a row.

What in the world happen to Barbourville against Williamsburg?

  • Author

you're not kidding. Boy, it made me look like a fool, didn't it.

Callie Mills scored 18 points, but Barbourville couldn't get anything going.

Williamsburg played great team defense.

The Lady Jackets are young and a long way away from competing for a district crown, but coach Rains is doing a great job with'em.

Maybe I shouldn't pump B'ville up so much, huh?

I didn't see the game but I figured with Mills & Banfield that would be enough for Barbourville to win. Wrong Again.

Rains may be the coach of the year considering how much Williamsburg has improved.

Cawood should be sixth or seventh.
