article 11th Region Week 6 Review

The season continues to grind on in the 11th Region. After the dust has settled from Christmas tournaments and other events most of our 11th Region teams have started to play in region and district games. One would think this would start to give us a more clear picture of the region as a whole but after this week I am not sure what to really expect anymore. Other then the top spot you could make an argument for numerous teams to be ranked anywhere from 2-10. Lets check out what went on this week and whats on deck for next!

 

TEAM RANKINGS

1. Lexington Catholic (15-1) - The Knights picked up 3 quality wins this week over Lexington Christian Academy, Boyle County, and Mercer County. The last two games of the week were part of the 2A Sectional tournament and granted Lexington Catholic a birth in this weeks 2A State tournament in Owensboro. The most important win of the week though has to be the first one over LCA which kept the Knights undefeated at 3-0 in the 43rd District and in prime position to be the 1 seed in the district tournament. Also, this week junior Ben Johnson verbally committed to Bellarmine, congrats to him!! Up next for the Knights is another big week. Lexington Catholic hosts Lafayette early in the week in another 43rd District battle then heads to Owensboro for the 2A state tournament where they open with Calloway County. Looking ahead the Knights could also meet up with Bourbon County and John Hardin while in Owensboro.

 

2. Henry Clay (9-5) - Henry Clay continues to play great basketball and is rounding into the form most of us expected as the beginning of the season. This week the Blue Devils picked up two HUGE wins over 42nd District competition with wins over Frederick Douglass and Scott County. With those wins Henry Clay is now the front runner for the 1 seed in the district which is always a big deal in the 42nd. The Blue Devils are in the midst of a brutal stretch where they play 8 games in a row on the road. This week they head over to Bryan Station for another big district matchup, go to Dunbar which is always a tough game between those 2 teams, and finish the week at Clay County against a solid Tiger team. A great chance for Henry Clay to cement themselves as one of the top teams in the region.

 

3. Tates Creek (11-5) - The Commodores continue to play really good basketball this season. This past week they went 2-1 with wins over Woodford County and Lafayette and dropped a close one to a good Bourbon County. Currently, Tates Creek sits at 3-1 in the 43rd District and holds the 2 seed. Its been a long time since Tates Creek has qualified for the region tournament but they are well on their way this season! Up next for the Commodores they host Paul Laurence Dunbar, who they've previously beaten but wasn't counted as a district win due to it being in a Christmas tournament, and then head to Southwestern this weekend.

 

4. Lexington Christian Academy (9-7) - The Eagles split their two 43rd District games this week with a close loss to Lexington Catholic and a 1 point win over Paul Laurence Dunbar. Currently LCA sits at 2-3 in the 43rd District which puts them as the 3 seed. The Eagles in my opinion have grossly over achieved this season with all they lost to graduation the last 2 years. Up next for LCA is the 11th Region All A Classic where they host and will be favored. They open up with Frankfort Christian Academy.

 

5. Frederick Douglass (10-5) - The Broncos split their 2 games this week. They dropped a game early in the week to Henry Clay which dropped them to the 2 seed in the district but bounced back nicely to beat a good Great Crossing team. Douglass was in the midst of a 4 game losing streak until the win over Great Crossing. DaShawn Jackson had a big game against GC. This week the Broncos host Scott County and Bryan Station in 2 HUGE 42nd District games.

 

6. Great Crossing (7-8) - The Warhawks finished the week 1-2 with a win over Frankfort and losses to Trinity and Frederick Douglass. Not the results they wanted throughout the week but the win over Frankfort was big in that it puts Great Crossing at 2-0 in the 41st District and still in control of their own destiny as far as seeding goes. This week a HUGE game Tuesday night against a much improved Western Hills team who is also currently undefeated in 41st District play, then they head to Franklin County in another 41st District game before heading to Madison Central over the weekend.

 

7. Madison Central (6-9) - The Indians split their 2 games this week with a win over Paul Laurence Dunbar and a loss to Logan County at a neutral site. Madison Central, while not having the best looking record, has drastically improved since the beginning of the season. This week the Indians head to Scott County before hosting Great Crossing to end the week.

 

8. Bryan Station (7-9) - The Defenders only played one game last week but they picked up a big win over Lafayette. The Defenders are really playing well and Coach Hammons has done a great job in a short time of making this young group competitive. This week Bryan Station hosts Henry Clay and Knox Central and heads to Frederick Douglass. A chance for the Defenders to solidify themselves in the race for the 1 seed in the 42nd District.

 

9. Madison Southern (8-6) - The Eagles picked up two wins this week over Model and Berea. While those two wins don't jump off the page at you the win over Berea is a little more impressive then normal as the Pirates are playing well. Madison Southern is playing well having won 4 of their last 5. This week the Eagles host East Jessamine, Garrard County, and head to Southwestern to play Logan County in the Iron Warrior Classic.

 

10. Western Hills (8-6) - The Wolverines finished the week 1-2 with a win over Henry County and losses to East Jessamine and Christian Academy of Louisville. Western Hills play CAL tough in the 2A section final but fell just short down the stretch. This week is about as big a week for Western Hills as they've had in 15 years. The Wolverines currently sit at 4-0 in 41st District play and are tied with Great Crossing for the 1 seed. Great Crossing hosts the Wolverines this Tuesday with the 1 seed on the line. To end the week the Wolverines will host Garrard County.

 

11. Scott County (6-8) - The Cardinals lost both games they played last week to Henry Clay and Oldham County. I do not believe the Cardinals will finish the season outside of our top 10 but at this moment they haven't done anything to prove they belong higher then this. This week Scott County hosts Madison Central and Lafayette and heads to Frederick Douglass between the two home games. A big week for the Cardinals to bounce back and rise in the rankings.

 

12. Paul Laurence Dunbar (5-10) - The Bulldogs dropped 2 close home games this week to Madison Central and LCA. Dunbar is currently dealing with an injury to leading scorer Tim Hall and they just cant seem to find their grove this season. Things get no easier for the Bulldogs this week as they head to Tates Creek, host Henry Clay, and finish the week at Covington Catholic.

 

13. Franklin County (6-7) - The Flyers finished the week 1-1 with a close loss to a good Eastern team and a big rivalry win on the road at Frankfort. Franklin County has yet to play more then 2 games with a full healthy squad and its taken its toll. This week Franklin heads to Carroll County, then hosts Great Crossing and Nicholas County.

 

14. Lafayette (4-12) - The Generals have lost 6 of their last 7 including 2 games this past week to Bryan Station and Tates Creek. The same old story for Lafayette as they just cant find a complimentary piece for big man Ray Surratt. Things get no easier this week as Lafayette hits the road to Scott County and Lexington Catholic.

 

15. Berea (10-4) - The Pirates dropped their only game this past week to crosstown rival Madison Southern in a close well played game. This week Berea heads to Frankfort and Evangel Christian.

 

16. Frankfort (5-12) - The Panthers are in the midst of a 9 game losing streak and dropped both games this past week to 41st District rivals Great Crossing and Franklin County. This week the Panthers host Berea to start off the 11th Region All A Classic.

 

17. Sayre (7-8) - The Spartans dropped their only game of the week last week a one point loss to Rockcastle County. Sayre opens up play in this weeks 11th Region All A Classic with a bye.

 

18. Model (4-10) - The Patriots dropped both games last week to West Jessamine and Madison Southern. This week they begin play in the 11th Region All A Classic with a bye.

 

19. Frankfort Christian Academy (0-9) - The Royals continue to remain winless on the season. This week they dropped games to St. Francis, Owen County, and Beth Haven. Up next the Royals open play in the 11th Region All A Classic with LCA.
