Category 2 Slight Risk Area for Saturday 1/11/2020 (updated)

Featured Replies

A Category 2 Slight Risk Area now includes sections of Kentucky. The severe risk associated with the northern part of the squall line that is expected to develop Friday night into Saturday may produce damaging wind gusts along with a possible tornado or two.

I'm going to go ahead and issue a Severe Weather Alert Day for tomorrow Saturday 1/11/2020. Since some of the severe weather may enter western Kentucky while some may still be sleeping. As of now, it appears the squall line may enter the western part of the state around 6 am/5 central. They should reach central and south-central Kentucky during the 11 am/10 central through 3 pm/2 central time slot. Those along the I-75 corridor could see the storms between the 1 pm/12 central through 5 pm/4 central time period. The threats still appear to be damaging winds and a possible brief tornado or two.

This is the GFS model radar showing the squall line entering Kentucky from the west then traversing across the state.

The NAM still is coming in slower than the GFS.

Those in the western part of the state should have a way to get notification of severe weather especially for early Saturday morning where some may still be sleeping when severe weather hits your area. I will update you early tomorrow morning.

The chance for strong to severe storms is still with us this morning. This slow-moving system will produce moderate to heavy downpours causing localized flash flooding. along with damaging winds up to around 58 mph. A few brief spin-up tornadoes will be possible. I have already received a couple of radar indicated tornado warnings in western Kentucky. Those who live along or close to the Tennessee border should keep a close eye on the weather later this afternoon. I will be monitoring this event throughout the day and post updates whenever possible.
