Ludlow 21 Bishop Brossart 6

Featured Replies

Two teams coming off of bye weeks, with both sporting 2-1 records came together Friday night at Bob Miller Stadium in Alexandria, and for the first quarter and a half, neither team was willing to yield the other a score. With 2:40 left in the half, the game remained scoreless in what appeared to be a "Pitcher's Battle."

The Mustangs had chances early in the second quarter, when we orchestrated a 75 yard drive from our own 5 yard line to the Ludlow 20, before Trevor Schadler, the Brossart QB, was jarred from behind, causing the ball to come out, which was recovered by the Panthers, who then marched the ball 75 yards in the other direction for a TD. The scoring play was a 2 yard plunge by Braxton Newborn with only 2:40 remaining in the half, giving his team a 6-0 lead, which would be the difference at intermission.

The third period would be a carbon copy of the first frame when neither team was able to score. Brossart senior Grant Haubner outscrambled the Ludlow quarterback for an errant snap, providing the Mustangs great field position and our second major opportunity to put numbers on the scoreboard. However, again the Ludlow defense was up to the task, and again turned us back, and the Panthers took their meager 6-0 advantage into the final 12 minutes of play.

With 5:14 remaining in the game, the Ludlow team got some separation, by capitalizing on an interception of a Trevor Schadler pass, extinguishing a Brossart drive, which was converted into a Panther score when Vallandingham found Brogan O'Brien open in the endzone for the two-possession lead. When Vallandingham again found Newton open for the two-point conversion, the home-standing Mustangs trailed 14-0.

The score would expand to 21-0 with only 48 seconds left in the game, when Cody Kramer broke free for a 50 yard marathon run, and then encored with a 4 yard touchdown, putting the icing on the cake at 21-0 when Cameron Underwood split the uprights for the PAT.

As the fans headed for the exits with time running out, Brossart Sophomore Quarterback Jacob Leicht picked up some substantial yards, setting up a touchdown pass to Devin Carson, who willed himself into the endzone, giving the Panthers a parting shot as time expired. Since time had expired, and the PAT insignificant, Andrew Schwartz was deprived of a chance to improve on his success ratio, and the game went into the history books at 21-6.

Ludlow improves to 3-1 on the young season and will return home to Ludlow next Friday night where they will host a Brossart district rival - Nicholas County. The Mustangs fall to 2-2, and will christen the new MAC (Mustang Athletic Complex) next Friday night when we host the 2A Holy Cross Indians.

I'm no football coach but when you have the ball with 2+ minutes and 2 timeouts left before half and Ludlow receives the second half kick why would you as a coaching staff basically watch the clock run out. I

would think even in high school you have a 2 minute offense right? Poor time management!

An interesting side note to this game is that the Mustangs did not draw a flag in the contest.
