For the 3rd time in 4 years the Clay County Middle School girs basketball team won the State Tournament at the KBA in Lexington by blowing away the competition. None of their games were even close. They were led by MVP Whitney Belle Jackson. Also making the all-tournament team were Kayla Smith and Blake Smith. Clay County defeated Sebastian Middle School from Breathitt County in the finals.

The tournament in open to anyone who wants to play in it. There is no qualifier to play in such as district or region. There were 20 teams in this years tournament. Clay played 5 games, 2 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. The tournament has improved each year they have had it. They run a class program at the KBA. The awards they gave away for the winning teams and all-tournament were very nice. This is a tournament that a lot more teams should take advantage of.

Sorry, sounds like you were there. I looked at the brackets and it only has 18teams w/4 total games played. I see now that there was an earlier game on Sat A.M. to lead into the brackets, my mistake.

It would be nice to have more teams participate, I wonder how publicized this is? The biggest problem is that many teams are just getting together unless they play an AAU season. The schools in my area don't really start until Oct 15 like the V teams. I know from traveling w/AAU that a lot of states play middle school bball in the fall during football.

Congrats Clay!!

they would be alot more teams participate but they hold it during most of the middle school tournaments several schools have complained but it hasn't changed anything My argument to the tourny directer was how can you call it a state t:madman: orney when you schedule it to where most of the teams can't participate.

My question is when do these teams start practicing to be able to play at such an early date? Next yr things will be different if the one new proposal passes regarding 8th graders. They would come under the KHSAA rules and could not start until the Oct 15th date!!

they usaully start the first week of school which is usually Aughust 3 4 5 I would like to see a start date change to allow the kids to play soccer. On the other hand an early start date allows the high school staff to pull up 7 8 grade girls
