Category 2 Slight Risk of storms for parts of Kentucky on Monday (Updated)

Featured Replies

Parts of Southcentral and Western Kentucky could see the possibility of thunderstorms during the day on Monday. Some of these possible storms could be strong to marginally severe.

Current indications are that by late morning or early afternoon these storms could form. Bowing segments with damaging wind appear to be the primary threat. Activity should weaken during the evening. For now, limiting factors keep the threat as marginal. Things could change and a slight risk area might be needed later.

Check back for updates later this evening. Take care and have a blessed Sunday.

As mentioned in this mornings post that changes may be needed. The Marginal Risk Area has been expanded to include most of Kentucky except for a portion of Eastern Kentucky. There is now a portion of Kentucky that is under a Category 2 Slight Risk Area for possible strong to severe storms.

Severe thunderstorms will be possible across portions of Kentucky Monday afternoon into the evening hours. These storms will be accompanied by a risk of potentially damaging wind gusts and perhaps a couple of tornadoes.

It might not be out of the question that some isolated supercell development could happen before a line advances northeastward across portions of the area.

I will post another update later this evening.

The organized severe threat has lessened some. The Storm Prediction Center has scaled back the Slight Risk Area in Kentucky. It is mostly just Southcentral Kentucky Centered on the Bowling Green Area. Parts of the rest of Kentucky is in a Marginal Risk Area. Severe thunderstorms, including the potential for damaging wind gusts, will be possible today. The tornado threat will be minimal in Kentucky and parts of Southern Indiana north of the Slight Risk Area.

I will update later this morning.

The Storm Prediction Center has increased the size and area of the Category 2 Slight Risk Area for strong to severe storms. Isolated to scattered severe storms capable of damaging winds and a few tornadoes are possible across parts of Kentucky and extreme Southern Indiana.

Heating/destabilization this afternoon will allow for a gradual intensification of updrafts near/ahead of the advancing front. The wind and tornado threat will diminish after sunset. I'll be keeping an eye on the situation and post an update when info warrants it.

A severe weather watch may be issued for parts of southwest Kentucky. The threats in this area look to be damaging wind gusts and a possible tornado or two.

nWo, is the Louisville area in the zone for tornado potential?

As of now, Louisville is just outside of the Slight Risk Area. It is in a category 1 Marginal Risk Area. While the chance is low in a Marginal Risk Area it is still possible for tornadoes to form.
