Bishop Brossart 20 Pendleton County 14

Featured Replies

The Brossart Mustangs defeated the Pendleton County Wildcats 20-14 on a dreary night in Alexandria to re-claim the Battle of 27 trophy, surrendered to the Wildcats a year ago, the result of a 14-13 loss in Falmouth.

Brossart pretty much dominated the first half, leading 14-0 at intermission, after having squandered two offensive possessions inside the Pendleton County 20 yard line just prior to the half. The Mustang touchdowns were the result of a 21 yard touchdown pass from Tyler MacDonald to Grant Haubner, and a 50 yard Will Schroer ramble on a fake punt.

The second half was a whole different story, as the Cats kicked on-side to the Mustangs to start the third quarter recovering the ball and taking possession, triggering a 57 yard drive and Mason Fuller touchdown, suddenly making the score 14-6 following an unsuccessful 2-point conversion attempt.

Brossart would score what appeared to be the icing-on-the-cake touchdown early on in the fourth quarter when Tyler MacDonald orchestrated a 90 yard drive that resulted in six first-downs capped off by a 28 yard touchdown pass to Mason Dennis, but with only a minute and thirty-six seconds remaining in the contest the Wildcats struck back, marching 50 yards on four offensive plays for a Matthew Campbell to Colby Bean score, and two-point conversion, causing the Mustangs some anxious late-game moments, before running out the clock and preserving the 20-14 victory.

The Wildcats, who play an independent, non-district schedule close the book on their 2018 campaign with a 2-8 record, but graduate only four seniors heading into 2019. The Brossart Mustangs improve to 6-4 and will gear up for the Raceland Rams next Friday night on the Music Highway near Ashland.

I think this is 4 years in a row Bishop and Raceland have met in the first round.

This is our fourth consecutive encounter with the Rams.

Our first was in 2015 when we lost a controversial 22-14 decision here in Alexandria at Bob Miller Stadium.

Our last two contests have been dominated by the Rams in Raceland, 47-21 in 2016, and then 55-14 last season that started them on the way to the Class 1A State Championship game.

Our defense will have to do a stand-up job in order for us to keep it close this year.
