BluegrassPreps Football Rankings (9/17)

Featured Replies

Class 1A

With Pikeville's loss to 3A power Belfry only two teams remain undefeated in Class 1A, Fulton County and Lynn Camp. Lynn Cmap makes their Top 10 debut this week. Pikeville and top-ranked Beechwood stay put in their rankings while putting up valiant efforts against top-tier schools from larger classes. The Panthers will look to jump back on the winning side making the long trip to the home of the Mothman to take on a very strong Point Pleasant, West Virginia squad. Also crossing state lines for a huge game will be #3 Raceland as they take on undefeated Portsmouth West from the Buckeye State. Paintsville earned a hard fought win over Williamsburg and will now face another stiff foe in 3A Lawrence County.

Class 2A

Three of Class 2A's Top 5 teams will see stiff tests this week from Top 5 foes from higher classifications. Top-Ranked DeSales will travel to Lexington to take on the Lexington Catholic Knights, a team determined to put a better foot forward after losing last week. Glasgow will look for their first true signature win against 4A's second-ranked team Franklin-Simpson. Mayfield will have a team with the "#2" by their name as well when they take on 3A's second-ranked Corbin Redhounds on a very neutral field in another state. Lexington Christian Academy returns to the Top 10 by way of a convincing win on the road at Walton-Verona. The Eagles now try to keep the mojo on their side against 1A Kentucky Country Day.

Class 3A

Three of the Top 5 teams in 3A had a chance to make a statement with stern tests from ranked squads from other classes. Lexington Catholic faded down the stretch against 4A Highlands and Central came just a point short against 6A powerhouse St. Xavier. Belfry was the lone member of the triumvirate to come out in the win column. The Pirates got all they could handle from 1A Pikeville but survived for a nice road win. Lexington Catholic's work is not done yet as Class 2A's top-ranked DeSales will come calling. Corbin has perhaps the toughest draw this week as they also set their sights on a 2A power when they pay Mayfield. Meanwhile within the class, Tilghman has been turning heads and will look to continue to do so in a huge District tilt against Caldwell County.

1. Boyle County at 6A #10 North Hardin

2. Corbin vs. 2A #2 Mayfield at Austin Peay State University

3. Central vs. Henry County

9. Bell County vs. McCreary Central

10. Elizabethtown vs. Edmonson County

Class 4A

Kentucky's version of the last wild frontier may very well be anything in Class 4A outside of the Top 5. Another wild week of games featured every team not named Wayne County losing in the 6-10 spots of last week's ranking. As a result, Taylor County makes their debut in the rankings. The Cardinals will try to avoid the losing curse against a formidable West Jessamine squad. Only two teams remain unblemished on the year. Ashland survived a scare across the river against rival Ironton, Ohio. Logan County took down a pesky McLean County squad. The only 4A team facing a ranked foe will be Franklin-Simpson. The Wildcats will try to avoid being bitten by the Scotties of Glasgow in a big Southern Kentucky clash.

1. Johnson Central at Boyd County

2. Franklin-Simpson vs. 2A #5 Glasgow

3. Ashland vs. Rowan County

4. Knox Central vs. Russell County

5. Logan County vs. Hopkins County Central

6. Wayne County vs. Clay County

7. Franklin County at Shelby County

8. Moore vs. Valley

9. Taylor County at West Jessamine

10. Hopkinsville -- OPEN

Class 5A

The rankings for Class 5A may look a little familiar this week. All ten teams remain in the same position as last week after eight of the nine teams who played this week secured victories. The lone hold out was Apollo. The Eagles lost a heart-breaker to red hot 2A Owensboro Catholic. Speaking of the Owensboro area, the Red Devils of Owensboro hammered 6A Daviess County to keep their run of good football going. The two most impressive wins out of those eight victories in the Top 10 were both from the Northern Kentucky area. Covington Catholic made their case for being the "King of the North" by thumping 1A's top team. Highlands served notice that they are legit by pulling away from previously undefeated 3A Lexington Catholic. Both teams need to stay focused as they each draw stout tests.

1. Covington Catholic at St. Francis de Sales (OH)

2. Bowling Green vs. Greenwood

3. South Warren vs. Rocky Mountain (CO)

4. South Oldham at Oldham County

5. Southwestern -- OPEN

6. Highlands vs. 6A #7 Simon Kenton

7. Anderson County -- OPEN

8. Owensboro -- OPEN

9. Apollo at Graves County

10. Christian County at Marshall County

Class 6A

Trinity may be the first team to ever say "We are playing Jeffersontown at the perfect time". The Shamrocks fell to 0-5 with a loss to an Illinois foe and will welcome with open arms the chance to re-calibrate against public school competition from their own city. Another team who will be happy to keep it local will be Scott County who finished their swing of traditional powers from Greater Cincinnati Metro Area with a lopsided defeat to GCL foe LaSalle. The Cardinals return to Central Kentucky against Bryan Station. Butler will have their shot to stake their claim as the team to beat in Jefferson County as they will challenge Male and their stone wall Defense. It is also judgement day for 6A Simon Kenton. The Pioneers are one of only three undefeated teams in the largest classification and will face their toughest challenge to date against 4A Highlands.

1. Male at #6 Butler

2. Scott County at 6A Bryan Station

3. Frederick Douglass vs. 6A Dunbar

4. Trinity vs. 6A Jeffersontown

5. Saint Xavier vs. 6A Pleasure Ridge Park

6. Butler vs. #1 Male

7. Simon Kenton at 5A #6 Highlands

8. Manual vs. 6A Seneca

9. Ballard at 6A Eastern

10. North Hardin vs. 3A #1 Boyle County
