August 18, 20188 yr Decision #1: Which tees - Blue, 7258; Black, 6928; or, White, 6592. At 72 years old I knew I was in trouble. Then we threw balls for partners - 1 hdcp; 4, 8 and 10, respectivelly. I got my son, the "1" that played great and I would need it. The stakes would be a Winged Foot hat for the winners. Fairways were better than any greens I have played in NKy; but, they were soft and surrendered little roll. But, I unfortunately only hit 7/14 and the ryegrass rough was brutal. The greens were huge with mastadons buried everywhere. The bent grass surface was rolling at about a "12" and incredibly was smoother than a pool table. My handicap is very dependent on my putting and this day I had the touch of a blacksmith with 7 three putts. No four putts thanks to the 15 footer on #18. The round was just an awesome experience with our scores of 74, 84, my 87, and a 91. This level of golf course is truly a special treat. Almost got our host suspended for 30 days because "no phones" at Winged Foot. Of course, no carts and our caddies were incredible. Losers were really poor sports as they wanted to payoff the bet with new, pink polka dot 2020 U. S. Open hats. We chose the black ones. Scratch Winged Foot off my bucket list.
August 18, 20188 yr Sounds like a great time. I hope to start crossing some of these types of courses off my list now that my kids are all out of the house....just took my youngest to college today. The only two big time courses I’ve played are Bethpage and Merion.

My observation was if I were to play from the tips my caddy couldn't pack enough balls to allow me to finish. Great course to watch the best.

Great course to watch the best. I shot 85 at Merion (played from middle tees...but even from the tips it’s not crazy long). My driver never came out of the bag. Extremely tight, and easy to get in trouble.

Extremely tight, and easy to get in trouble. Nice round! At the Open they had 4 or 5 holes with the rough grown to about a foot high with 240 carry to get to the 6 inch stuff. Anybody that could not carry that far had no reason to look for their ball and that is where my best would be. Seems to me that a hole on the front (maybe 4,5, or 6) went straight up a hill cambered hard toward the stream running the full length of hole. The fairway was cut to the creek and the green had the same camber to the creek. First day the pin was low left and saw multiple guys putt into the creek. Believe Justin Rose won. Special for me because Brandon Browne (family friend) from Shelbyville, Ky qualified but did not make the final cut.
