Washington's Chris Petersen and ESPN

Washington Huskies fans hated ESPN's coverage of their team on Saturday, and it's not hard to see why

West Coast sports fans often complain about East Coast bias. Sports media and the majority of sports fans being based east of the Pac-12 and Mountain West mean those conferences receive less attention and often end up with unsavory kickoff times, limiting exposure for quality athletes.

"We want to play at 1:00 [PT]. It hurts us tremendously in terms of national exposure. No one wants to watch our game on the East Coast that late, and we all know it." Washington head coach Chris Petersen said before the Huskies' 38-7 win over Cal. "It is painful for our team. It's painful for our administration. And we know certainly the most important part is (it's painful) for our fans."

On College GameDay, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit countered by arguing UW should be grateful to be on TV at all, more or less.

ESPN vs. Washington? Cupcakes, Kirk Herbstreit comments, and more - SBNation.com

ESPN comes off looking extemely petty and childish in all of this, IMO. And yeah, maybe UW looks a little whiny, but Petersen's just trying to advocate for his team and his conference. Nationwide exposure still matters in college football. As much as I might want to sometimes, I just can't stay up till 2am or later for a west coast game. I don't see any reason why Pac-12 games (especially games involving a top 5 team like UW) can't get a primetime slot on ABC or ESPN every once in a while.

During the broadcast of the Washington/Cal game, announcers Mark Jones and Rod Gilmore ignored what was happening on the field for long stretches at a time just to take shots at Petersen and his team, while the sideline reporter used actual cupcakes as props to describe Washington's out of conference opponents. They're not wrong, just very unprofessional.

Pretty simple. Make people on the east coast care about Washington football. People on the east coast care about USC so when USC plays a big opponent they get a prime time eastern time zone game. If Washington had beaten Alabama last year they'd have some better starting time for their games. Go about your business and make people care. You can't tell me you're bumping Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Clemson, etc. off primetime to watch a team no one on this side of the country wants to watch. Personally I'd like to be able to see Washington play during better times, but I'm far from the casual fan.

Good point. I definitely don't disagree with you. The way ESPN handled it was very disappointing, though. They should aspire to be better than that.

I think Petersen bringing it up in the first place was kind of dissapointing and came off as petty. Just my opinion of course, but it's already been proven that the committee will put Washington in the playoff if they deserve it.
