Covington Catholic 4 St Henry 0

Featured Replies

CovCath with 3 goals in the first 20 minutes, and then tack on a 4th (really bad call, young man was way off) late.

St Henry has a lot of talented kids, they'll be fine.

CCH goals by Deimling, Wulfeck, Foster and Belton. Lots of work to do by CCH in being able to hold the ball. St. Henry looked pretty punchless to me offensively but did a good job of possession. One CCH goal via PK and one via free kick.

He did look offside to me as well but I think they ruled the ball was played to him by St. Henry.

AR made it look worse by raising his flag a solid 30 seconds late, as all of the players were walking to the circle. Necessitated a convo with the center. Bad look, to be sure, but superfluous in the grand scheme.

Yes that was odd. No idea what was going on with that.

Pretty dominate performance by CCH, thought it could have been 7-0. But totally agree CCH has a lot of work to do. Midfield was non existent first half and a few to many players only look to go forward.

As I expected St Henry had trouble with the speed of play, they also really struggled defensively.

Congrats to Cov Cath on the win. Strong, as usual.

Nice to see some new CCH guys take the field. Shout out to Evan Moon. You will not find a nicer kid, anywhere.

Nice to see Mentschie and little Mentschie.

CCH lights are a thing of beauty!

Good luck to CCH the rest of the season. Nice group of players to work with.

It was great to see you and your beautiful family -- or at least some of it. Ha. Thanks for hanging out for a while, always my pleasure.

Couple of revisions to offside are going to cause a lot of what people will think are strange calls.

1. The deliberate play issue with defenders. Remember deliberate, not good.

2. I assume high school adopted the change for the restarts where the kick is now where the offside occurs, like where the ball is touched. So the flags will be really delayed now.

As far as raising the flag and having a convo, perhaps they had to discuss if the defender made the deliberate play? Just a guess.

He didn't raise the flag late with a proper offsides signal, he waved it late straight over his head with a little wave, almost like an AR signaling a foul, but not that either. It was clear to 100% of those in attendance that he wasn't sure what he saw, what he should call, and that indecision came across in both his mechanics, as well as the timing of them. Again, not a factor, but the 4th goal, at best, deserves a bit of an asterisk.

I believe this is what happened. When an AR needs to get the attention of the Center Ref they wave the flag overhead. I don't think he was signaling a late offsides call but was trying to get the attention of the center ref to discuss what happened. They did that and awarded the goal. I believe it was judged that the St. Henry player passed the ball which would nullify the offsides call since CCH didn't make the pass. Just my guess.

I'll take your word for it, I wasn't there. I would think though if the AR wasn't sure then we wouldn't want the flag up and stopping the play.

I would think the better option to to try and let what could be a legitimate goal play out and then talk about something after the fact. Rather than stop it only to find out you shouldn't have.

Is the correct AR mechanics in this situation to watch the play evolve, watch the goal scored then stand in your position, instead of running up the line to the top of the 18? This should signal the center ref, "we need to talk."

That sounds familiar now that you mention it. I would guess it isn't widely used just simply because that situation isn't that common. I can imagine some refs don't know.
