Pre-season region by region breakdown

Featured Replies

I know we still are almost 2 months away from when actual wrestling competition starts. But before you know it we will all be in Frankfort watching the state tournament. So, with that in mind, everybody give their opinion about the region where you are from. How each team will do in the regular and post-season, how many state contenders each region has. Just kinda get everybody up to speed. Because wrestling is a great sport, just not as many teams are involved. Remember there are 8 regions... Western KY, Mid KY, West Jefferson, Central Jefferson, East Jefferson, Northern KY, Central KY and Eastern KY.

Ok I will start. Since I live in region 8, so that will be the region I will do. Wayne County, Sheldon Clark and Johnson Central are the top teams in the region this year. Travis Sullivan (Wayne Co.) is a 2-time state champ at 103 and will more than likely win state this year. He could wrestle anywere from 119 to 135. Wayne has a bunch of other great wrestlers, but I'm not sure on their names. Sheldon Clark has some good talent as well. Ryan Kelly, Matt Slone should be on the poudium this year. SC has a bunch of freshman and sophomores that won state while they were 7th and 8th graders. Johnson Central has a solid team this year. Corey Spencer, Cody Lowe, Tyler Grimm, Jordan Freeman and others could lead this team to a regional title. Overall region 8 is a tough region. A team that is going to make alot of noise is Letcher County Central. Coach Rex Frohnapfel (I hope I spelled his name right) is going to have his team ready to go come post-season. Whitley County, Lawrence County, Ashland, McCreary Central and Perry Central all have good programs. It will not be the same without seeing Murton dominate state this year.

Region 2

LaRue

Anderson

John Hardin

North Hardin

Central Hardin

Campbellsville(? - I think they're in the region now)

Danville

Fort Knox

I'm probably leaving some teams off :(

I think McCreary Central will be one of the better teams this year. They return stars in Jacob Watson, Chris Espinoza, and many more talented wrestlers.

True, but didnt there coach get fired?

Actually, it did happen, but only for a week. Bozeman is back and is coach of the Raiders. After he was "fired," angry parents called the school board/high school and he was reinstated. He was aparently taking the wrestling and asst. football coach job in a Georgia HS, but declined and is still the coach of the Raiders.

Yes, he lead the elementary to their first ever state championship, and the only state championship in the county's history, sadly. I think the wrestling program will only continue to grow and the state wrestling eyes will be on McCreary.

I'd say that LaRue has got to be the favorite to win this region again.

I always like to watch Bozeman lead those boys. He's a great coach. Is Jacob Watson a senior now? I remember he was good when I was in high school HA

I'm definatley a big McCreary fan. Ever since Matt Troxell put me on my back match after match way back when. MUAHAHA

Yeah, Jacob is a senior now. McCreary has had some good wrestlers in their history, and I think it'll continue to get better.

Does anybody have any info on region 1? I am curious to see what weight Adam Carr from Union County will wrestle at.

Region 8 will have some good freshman this year. McCreary Central will have some dandy freshman wrestlers. Sheldon Clark will have Matt Slone, he probably can win state this year as a freshman. Johnson Central has Tyler Grimm, he won middle school state last year and should be 130 or 135 this year. Wayne County has some very good young 189, 215 and HWT., but I cant remember their names.
