Kris Wilkes lost his No. 1 jersey, then helped Indiana All-Stars to a big win

INDIANAPOLIS — Consecutive win No. 17 came with a big boost from No. 15. Via No. 1.

 

IndyStar Indiana Mr. Basketball Kris Wilkes of North Central led the Indiana All-Stars with 29 points as the boys extended their winning streak over Kentucky in the annual series to a record 17 games with a 94-89 win on Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

 

Wilkes was wearing a No. 15 jersey, not the customary Mr. Basketball No. 1. Where was his No. 1 jersey?

 

“I put it with the dirty clothes on Tuesday and haven’t seen it since,” he said.

 

He might stick with No. 15 after Saturday’s performance. Wilkes took over when necessary, making nine of his first 10 shots and finishing 12-for-18 from the field. He also had six rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

 

Wilkes did just enough to outduel Kentucky Mr. Basketball Taveion Hollingsworth, who finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds. But the 6-3 Hollingsworth, a Western Kentucky recruit, was limited to 10-for-26 shooting as he was guarded by the taller Wilkes in the second half.

 

“He’s a good player, but when I guarded him more, he wasn’t attacking as much,” Wilkes said. “Going into (Sunday), I’ll stay on him and fight through the screens and try to shut him down more.”
