Prepare the ground...lay either compost or fertilizer and till it in before laying the sod.

 

Stagger the sod pieces.

 

Roll after laid to smooth the surface and also assure the sod is in contact with the soil beneath.

 

If you need a roller for afterwards, I have one you can borrow if you want to pick it up in Frankfort. It is hand roller or pull behind, but I would suggest hand rolling on new sod.
