Thursday afternoon(4/20/17) Severe Weather Outlook

Featured Replies

The Storm Prediction Center has parts of Kentucky in a Marginal Risk Area for strong to severe storms Thursday afternoon. This area is mainly from WKY along the Ohio River to NKY. Thunderstorms are expected to develop near/ahead of a cold front by early afternoon across portions Indiana. These storms will eventually progress towards Kentucky by late afternoon and evening. The threats look to be damaging wind gusts, hail and perhaps a tornado or two.

I will update later today.

Thursday morning update.

The Cincinnati area is now in a Slight Risk Area for strong to severe storms late this afternoon into the evening hours. Severe Storms capable of producing damaging winds, hail, and maybe a tornado or two will be possible. Looking at this morning HRRR data I would be surprised to see the Slight Risk area expanded to include more of Kentucky. As of right now the timing looks to be between 6-10 pm EDT. Some of the strongest storms could be in the Louisville area so be weather aware later today. That is why I'm thinking the Storm Prediction Center will include that area in the Slight Risk Area later.

I'll post updates later around midday.

Midday update:

As expected the Slight Risk Area has been expanded back westward but the severe threat has shifted a little more to the west and north. So Kentucky is not in the Slight Risk Area bu a huge portions is in an Marginal Risk Area for strong to severe storms. Western Kentucky and the NKY/Cincinnati Area should be on the lookout for strong to severe storms later today. Other parts of KY could see some severe weather but it should not be as organized as in the aforementioned areas.

The surface cold front should provide the focus fro the development of clusters of storms or line segment storms. The conditions favor damaging winds as the primary threat, though isolated/marginally severe hail could also be possible. While the threat is low and isolated tornado or two can't be ruled out.

The timing seems to be between 5-11 pm EDT for the strongest storms. Be weather aware later today.
