February 3, 20179 yr Feb 3rd 1959 is known as most know as "The day the music died." Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson all died when a airplane they had chartered, to get off of the freezing cold tour bus, crashed shortly after take off in Iowa. The story is that Waylon Jennings (a member of Holly's band) was to be on the flight also but gave his seat up to a sick Richardson. When Buddy Holly joked to Waylon that he hoped his bus froze up, Jennings reportedly replied, "Well I hope your old plane crashes", words that are said to have haunted him the rest of his life. Something that came out of this is a Victim Notification Policy that has Police not releasing the names of anyone killed to the press until their family is notified. Buddy Holly's wife was pregnant at the time and heard of his death on television, the psychological trauma led to her losing the baby.
February 3, 20179 yr On a side note, I read that Tommy Allsup recently passed away. He lost a coin toss which gave the airplane seat to Valens.
