On Saturday, January 28, Newport High School will host the Donna Murphy Classic featuring three games between NKY and Cincinnati teams. The Classic's namesake, Donna Murphy, has the distinct honor of being the first recipient of Kentucky's "Miss Basketball" award in 1976 as a senior for Newport.

 

The match-ups go as follows:

 

3:00pm- Notre Dame Academy(6-11) v. Trimble County(13-3)

The Raiders enter the game still riding the wave of being crowned the 8th Region representative in the All "A" Classic and will take on the perennial 9th region contender Notre Dame Academy Pandas.

 

5:00pm- Newport Central Catholic(8-9) v. Williamstown(10-6)

 

The Demons will travel north to take on the de facto second home team Thoroughbreds who owe five of their losses to out of region competition. Williamstown comes to town boasting a (5-0) record against other regions, as well as the #2 three point shooter in the state in Michaela Kennedy.

 

7:00pm- Newport(6-13) v. Roger Bacon(11-5)

 

In the final match-up of the evening, the host Wildcats will welcome the Roger Bacon Spartans of Cincinnati's Greater Catholic League across the river for their first taste of bluegrass competition this season, though the Spartans' coaching staff has its basketball roots on the south side of the river.
