The dreaded First Round BYE week

Featured Replies

Title shows my opinion. Curious as to what others think? The advantages of rest, healing time, and prep are obvious plusses. The negatives that come to mind are significant change to weekly routine, loss of momentum to #1 seeds season, advantage loss to 2nd round opponent having a playoff experience and victory under their belts, that much extra time coach has to make sure players don't get use to accolades and pats on their backs, and even the risk of roundball season starting to creep into the less critically occupied mind.

In all my conversations with coaches, (recognizing the BYE only happens to #1 seeds that would be hosting), it appeared very strongly that they would prefer the game against a 4 seed than a BYE. They did not like the thoughts of inactivity week #1 and then going into their first playoff action against the winner of a #2 vs #3. Makes sense to me. What say you fellow BGPrs?

Coaches know how this works since everyone has a bye week during the season. This bye week is complicated by fall break. Most teams come back pretty "rusty" afterwards.

Every playoff reduction discussion seems to conclude 16 teams per Class means two teams in each disrict and is too few; and the present 32 teams, four per district creates the disproportionate #1 vs 4 mismatches. A reduction to 24 teams, three per district automatically creates the Dreaded BYE for every #1 seed. Thought this thread might reveal a little of our active, still in the trenches coaches' thoughts.
