Playoffs without a Conf Champ?

Featured Replies

Playoffs without a Conf Champ? It could happen...probably won't, but it is possible.

Here is one way it could...

ACC

Clemson slips up and loses the ACC Title game to Va. Tech or UNC, Clemson ain't getting in. With 2 losses already neither are VaTech or UNC. Louisville dominate everyone else on their schedule and they would go to the playoffs instead of Clemson.

SEC

Auburn or LSU win out and beats Bama along the way, then loses the SEC Title Game to Florida which would have just lost to either FSU and LSU, with 2 losses they aren't getting in, Bama with 1 loss get's in over 2 loss Florida.

Big 10

Nebraska loses to OSU this week giving them 2 losses on the season and eliminating them. Michigan loses to OSU in a good game on the road giving them their first loss. OSU then goes to Indy and loses rematch with Nebraska, giving them a 2nd loss...Michigan to the playoffs.

Big 12 Oklahoma wins out which means they give Baylor a 2nd loss and the Sooners end the season with 2 losses...Big 12 sits out the playoffs this season.

PAC 12

Washington and Washington St win out until the last game of the season, State beats the Huskies and goes to PAC Title game. With 2 losses win or lose they or the PAC South winner aren't getting in...Washington with 1 loss at Wash St., waltzes into the playoffs.

However unlikely these scenarios are, I think most can agree under these circumstances each Conf winner would not make the playoffs based on multiple losses and a team not even in the title game with just 1 loss would be the logical choice to be in the Top 4.

I would bet $10 on one of those scenarios playing out. Most specifically Clemson losing the ACC Champ game and UofL getting in, or Bama losing to LSU or Auburn and still getting in. I think it would be interesting to see if Bama loses to LSU/ Auburn and LSU/ Auburn wind up winning the SEC champ game, who gets in? I don't think a 2 loss SEC champ gets in. So would they take Michigan if they lose to OSU and have 2 Bug 10 teams? Would they take UofL and Clemson and have 2 ACC schools? Or would they simply keep Bama ahead of LSU/ Auburn even though they lost? Would be very interesting.

Yeah, there are a lot of crazy possibilities. The more I thought about it, before I started this thread the more I saw how likely at least one Non-Conf Champ could (and rightly so) get into the playoffs.
