Class 5A Notebook (10/18/16) District Champions

Last week in Class 5A there were no top ten matchups. As well, all of the top ten teams did as expected and posted wins. Even though last week wasn’t full of excitement and upsets, there are still some scores and games to take note of, particularly South Laurel’s near upset of Pulaski County. This coming week will be much different however, as 6 of the top ten teams face off against each other, with each of those games deciding district championships. More on this week’s games later in the article.

Last Week’s games

As mentioned in the first paragraph, Pulaski County was nearly upset by a South Laurel team that only has 3 wins on the season. In fact, if a game winning field goal had not been called back due to a false start, the Cardinals would have pulled off the upset. After the 5 yard penalty, Pulaski County blocked the second attempt at the game winning field goal and went on to win 28-27. While some say Pulaski County seemed to be just going through the motions and expecting a win, hats off to the South Laurel kids for playing their hearts out in this one.

Another game that is noteworthy was the Christian County and Graves County game. Christian County came into this game ranked sixth in class 5A, while Graves County was just outside of the top ten. At halftime of this one, it looked as though an upset was still possible for Graves County as the score for both teams was nil. However the Colonels got things going in the second half and scored 36 unanswered over the Eagles. Christian County moved up to 5th in this week’s rankings due to the lackluster performance last week by Pulaski County. The Colonels have this week off to prepare for 4A #6 John Hardin next week, while the Eagles travel to Owensboro to face the #4 Red Devils.

Last week’s game of the week prediction was Highlands versus Covington Catholic. In terms of a good game to watch this certainly was not the game of the week as Covington Catholic won the game 63-26. The Colonels took out years of frustration on the Bluebirds in this one, ten years to be exact. The Colonels broke the script in this one and exploited Highlands rushing defense, putting up 514 yards on the ground, while only allowing 179. Highlands did manage 304 yards through the air, but it wasn’t enough to keep the score close as the Colonels scored quick and often in this one. The last time the Colonels posted a win over the Bluebirds was in the 2006 playoffs, a year that Covington Catholic went on to win a state championship. Oddly enough, those Colonels faced Bowling Green in the 3A State Championship game, in which the Colonels defeated the Purples 27-8. That’s just something to think about as both Bowling Green and Covington Catholic could meet again in the State Championship game for the first time since 2006.

This Weeks Games

This week is packed full of good games, as mentioned earlier, three of these games will determine district championships. Bowling Green/Greenwood, Covington Catholic/Dixie Heights, and Pulaski County/Southwestern all face off this weekend to determine who wins their district. Also while Owensboro has already won their district and Christian County will finish second, Graves County is looking to pull off the upset and build momentum heading into the playoffs. Look for the Eagles to challenge the Red Devils this week, those kids are hungry and those two teams match up well.

First up is Bowling Green versus Greenwood, the battle of Warren County. We all knew that Greenwood would be a really good team this season, but due to them seemingly only focusing on the run, no one knew how good they could really be. It turns out that they are very good, with their only loss coming from 4A #2 Franklin-Simpson, by 4 points. The Purples on the other hand, can beat you every way possible, even mentally at this point. For Greenwood to win this one and take the district crown they will have to control the time of possession and limit the Purples from quick scores. Even though that seems like a sound game plan for a team like Greenwood, it’s easier said than done when you’re playing this season’s edition of the Purples.

Next up is Covington Catholic versus Dixie Heights. The only thing I can say for sure about this one is that the Colonels will win district 5. Honestly, both teams have been pleasant surprises this season. We all knew Covington Catholic would be a top ten team, but for them to clearly be the number two team in class 5A at this point in the season is a bit surprising, to most of us at least. Dixie Heights on the other hand is another pleasant surprise. Those Colonels only losses thus far have came from the larger 6A NKY schools. While the 40-20 win over Highlands was an eye opener, it was not as impressive as Covington Catholic’s dismantling of the Bluebirds. One thing thing that Dixie Heights does very well that seems to cause Covington Catholic problems though is run, run, and run some more. Can they do what Covington Catholic did to Highlands and win the game on the ground?

Last but not least is Owensboro versus Graves County. I know what you’re thinking and no, I didn’t forget about Pulaski County and Southwestern, more on that one in a minute. But anyway, this game deserves some attention. Owensboro moved up to the number 4 slot in the rankings this week, Graves County was just outside of the top ten but gave up some big plays to Christian County, which cost them to lose 36-0 after a halftime stalemate of 0-0. While Owensboro beat Christian County and Christian County beat Graves County, this game is intriguing. These two teams match up well against each other, as both of them like to play power football. This game will be won in the trenches and on the ground, so expect it to be a close one, closer than Graves County game last week versus Christian County.

Game of the Week

I told you I didn’t forget about the annual battle of Pulaski County. In this week’s game of the week, #6 Pulaski County travels the short distance to #7 Southwestern. Southwestern has had this game circled since October 23rd of last year when they lost to Pulaski County 52-6. Do not expect a similar score this year. While Pulaski County has the better record at (7-1) with their only loss to 6A #3 Scott County, Southwestern is holding strong at (6-2) with losses to class 3A #2 Corbin and class 2A #5 Danville. With this being a rivalry game that decides the district championship, throw everything that was just mentioned out the window.

Actually a Graves upset over Owensboro would make Christian the district champs. That would put all 3 teams at 3-1 n the district and would go to the point system with out of district wins. Not sure who beat who but Christian has beaten Hoptown and Caldwell that should get them the nod I think..

I did not know that, I figured the head to head win at Christian County would seal the deal. How does the out of district point system work? Sounds like something I need to learn more about.

I think if CovCath/Bowling Green were to play this year it would be in the semifinals, not the championship.
