strike-3 Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Aces fall to 0-3. The Aces did seem to play with a little more effort this evening than last week. Offensively Apollo was unimpressive, but they did pick it up a bit towards the end of the 3rd and into the 4th. Michael Pope, seemed to have some accuracy issues and wasn't getting a lot of time to throw early on, but he settled down a bit towards the end of the game, and hopefully can build off the late success going into next week against Grayson Co. The much anticipated return of Stewart Ijames, did improve Catholic's running game, but their passing offense is still nowhere near where it has been in the past. I only recall one well thrown deep ball all night and it was thrown by Ijames, not the QB. Catholic scored on the trick play (HB pass) and capitalized of a botched punt attempt by the Eagles, with a 40ish yd. QB keeper for a score. I didn't hear Neil Holland's name all night and don't think he played but I have no idea as to why. Evan Walker, did not look good tonight, especially throwing deep. He basically put the ball up for grabs several times, and the Eagles took advantage of his mistakes. Walker was picked off 5 times, 3 by Michael Mattingly (he now has 6 on the season) and the other 2 were by Devin Matlock. The Aces offense has been ill this season but the Doctor is giving them a prescription for Daviess Co. next week and a date with the Panthers is usually a good cure for offensive woes. (Yea that was pretty corny but its late). Next week I would look for the Aces to finally get their 1st win of the season as well as their 1st win at Steele Stadium.
ACESfan Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 The Aces defense looked a lot better and the guys played a lot harder. Ijames at safety was awesome. That is the big hitter this defense is lacking and he could spell Winckleplek who goes out every third play with injury. Walker did struggle but he needs to look at Norcia more often. That kid has good hands and with his size should be unguardable. He was open a few times and was just missed. Holland seemed to have an ankle injury and hopefully will return next week. With Holland and Ijames this offense should be able to move the ball.

This team is heading in the right direction. Defense looked much better but I think the O-line needs to work on run blocking.
