Belfry 47 Harlan County 13

Featured Replies

Running clock with around 7:30 to go in the 2nd Quarter

Belfry rolled with ease and Harlan County chose the wrong team to play a bad game against. Pirates turn the Bears over early and often and score at will.

Corbett with a nice night, Catron scores 3 different ways, Devin Varney gets his second and third INT's on the young season, Horton gets a couple fumble recoveries, and Peyton Hensley gets his first Varsity Touchdown

Belfry desperately needs a challenge..should finally come next week against NewCath

BELFRY

246 rushing yards

49 yards passing

295 yards on 24 plays

5 Forced Turnovers

45 plays, 175 yards for Harlan County..only about 25 of that against the Belfry starters

I just want to say I hope Belfry fans truly take grasp of this team and enjoy this season.

This is something you don't see often and for the prestigious history of Belfry football, this specific team is an once in a generation kind of squad.

I kind of feel the Belfry fanbase has began to get spoiled over the past few years to the point they don't show up like you expect, or lack perspective of what this group of Seniors are doing.

I have never witnessed a Belfry team, or for that matter a team from EKY, that has the scary potential to make a "WOW" type of play every single down like this squad. Literally every snap, whether on Offense, Defense, or Special Teams there is a chance Belfry might make either a highlight play or score the football.

PERSPECTIVE

Belfry has beat 5A Harlan County and 6A Tates Creek in successive weeks and when the Starters were pulled the combined score was 83-6

Outside of the 80 yard TD pass for Tates Creek, Belfry's starters had allowed less than 50 combined yards in that time frame.

It was right at the 8:00 mark against Tates Creek and right at the 7:30 mark against HC that the running clock started. This means Belfry's 1's had scored 12 TD's in approximately 30:30 of game action. Just think about that! Now consider that included in that was the fact both TC and HC received the opening kickoff in both games, and Tates Creek recovered two Belfry fumbles in Special Teams.

I don't do this to try and rub in the victory...but just give perspective. If there was ever a year that Pond Creek Nation needs to go all in and cherish every snap it is this one.

Just rewatched the game and the first fumble recovery was actually made by Devin Varney and not Ray Horton. Add that to Varney's two interceptions and his other work for the night and it is not hard to see why he was named player of the game.

The offensive line is just something else to watch. I know they get attention for their size, but there is big guys on every roster. These boys have been coached well and they have worked very hard since their early middle school days to become what they are now.

Kudos to the coaching staffs of Belfry High and Middle Schools. They work together and are training football players from every level from middle, frosh, JV and varsity. It ain't easy to do that and maintain it from year to year and these coaches do it as well as anybody.

The Pirates need to play 4 quarters, and hopefully they will get that test next Friday against NewCath.

We are entering the portion of the schedule where complacency could be a problem, and there are 4 opponents coming up who can make you pay if you are not ready to go. Newport Catholic, Pikeville, Knoxville Catholic TN and Cabell Midland WV. Tough stretch of games that will help to prepare you for a playoff run. Lets hope we emerge stronger for it and without any major injuries.

Speaking of injuries, last year's Finals MVP Andrew Fletcher is out for a while with a knee injury and Grayson Cook went down last night with a shoulder injury. I hope both boys have a speedy recovery and can get back on the field soon.

I just want to say I hope Belfry fans truly take grasp of this team and enjoy this season.

I had this conversation yesterday with another fan. This team has the opportunity to do something really rare and special in high school football and I hope we can all enjoy the ride. They sometimes make it look so easy that you lose sight of how much preparation and sweat goes into what they are doing. For many years Belfry was good but just on the outside looking in at state championships. I can't believe we are talking about a 4 peat. Blows my mind.
