What does FIP stand for?

 

Fielding Independent Pitching

 

It measures what a pitchers run prevention independent of the defense is. So basically it looks at outcomes that don't involve the other 8. Strikeouts, BB, HRs, and HBP. It calculates the ERA given the league average performance on balls put in play.

 

Formula: FIP = (13 (HR) + 3 (BB+HBP) - 2 (K) divided by IP) + FIP Constant (~3.10)
