July 19, 201610 yr Good point. And you do not need to have it paid off. I have used HELOC for things. Probably one of the best was to buy a used car that was obviously not going to last long at the price and popularity - in fact, another party had run off the bank for loan approval. But we were able to write a HELOC check on the spot and buy the car. We use it for short term buys or payoff's. Kids tuition is an example and than pay it off in a month or two. Get the right off on the equity line.
