May 16, 201610 yr Top 5 UofL swept a 3 game series against Top 15 NC State at JPat this weekend. Pitching was dominant and offense was good enough -- despite a 1 hit weekend from star OF Corey Ray. FRI - McKay locked NC State up over 7.2 and Burdi struck out 3/4 in 1.1 IP. McKay gave up only 3 H, walked 2 and Kd 8. Solak with a 1st inning HR and then the Cards tacked on an insurance run in the 7th on a Logan Taylor single to drive in Tiberi. SAT - Harrington was solid over 7.0 scattering the baserunners until the 7th when NC State scored 2. Henzman worked out of trouble after allowing 2 singles to start the 8th. Burdi struck out the heart of the NS State order in the 9th in dominant fashion. Although NC State outhit them, the Cards were able to string together their hits to plate all 4 runs in the 5th, 3 of them with clutch 2 out hits (Smith, Solak & McKay). SUN - SR Kyle Funkhouser was brilliant on Senior Day giving up only 2 hits over 7.0. He had 8 Ks. It certainly helped to get staked to an early lead. NC State starter had experienced some pain after his last start and they were very careful with him. 2 BBs, a SAC bunt and a hit plated 2 runs in the 1st. SR Rosenbaum's surprising bunt single in the bottom of the 2nd was followed by a towering HR by Ellis. He is on a HR tear this past week. That sent the starter to the showers. Single (Taylor), SB, BBs (Smith & Solak) a WP and a SAC fly all added up to 4 runs on 3 hits to build a comfortable 6-0 lead. Bordner did not help himself by walking the 1st 2 batters in the 8th. A FC and then a single plated a run for NC State. Wolf allowed another single for the 2nd run and then got a FC (3-2) and a K to end the inning and the bases loaded threat. SR Kidston worked a clean 9th with 2 Ks and a fly out to insure the sweep. After a TUE game with IN at JPat, the next week & change will be in NC w/ a THU-SAT series with Wake Forest and a then the ACC Tourney in Durham. Barring a total collapse in those 7+ games, UofL looks to have a very good shot at 1 of the 8 national seeds. That would insure all postseason games short of Omaha at JPat where the Cards are 32-1 this season.
May 16, 201610 yr Author Good to see Tiberi from Holy Cross doing well for UL. He has played well from the jump. Was batting .500 for the 1st 20 games or so. Playing a very competent 3B (the turf at home helps) and having solid ABs every game. He is draft eligible as a redshirt SO (I am pretty sure) this year and played in the Cape Cod last summer to very good effect. Suspect he will be chosen and can decide whether he wants to pay for play OR return to UofL. Ellis' natural position is apparently 3B so he could move in there nicely next year. Ray definitely and Solak probably are gone. Funk, Harrington & Burdi also likely gone from the pitching side of things. Not sure about McClure, but I think he is just a natural Sophomore. Soooo glad we get McKay back for 1 more year.
May 17, 201610 yr When in the heck is UofL's contract up with Adidas? Those have to be the UGLIEST/GOOFIEST baseball pants I have ever seen. However, I say this every year it seems with whatever sport uniform the CARDS don.
