In the 4/26 Lexinton Herald, there is a wonderfully revealing story on Will Allen, a state record senior sprinter at Dunbar. A KHSAA 400M record holder at 47.09, and personal best 46.38 at the NB Outdoor Nationals. I regret my inabilities to link the story to this post (70 year old non-techi). But the young man's story is inspiring to read and his trek back from Honduras may be a life-saving journey. If this thread gains any traction, I may share my experiences in Honduras to reinforce what he found and would fear daily.

He is something to watch. Sounds like a great kid too. He's the kind of sprinter that you don't want to miss running; even if you are running against him.

Thanks CasualFan. I know this site doesn't get a lot of action. This is even my first viewing, but I was so impressed with his story, I felt BGP readers would enjoy reading about him. If he was a basketball or football player, the thread about him would explode.

 

Maybe a mod will pickup on his story and post it legitimately where the visibility will be better served. Hope so!

I have spent time in Honduras, for Will to say he had been to some places in Kentucky that were similar....no way. Honduras is one of the poorest large land masses in Central America. It's poor in a way that Americans, unless you have been there, cannot comprehend. Small children going to school, carrying 1 quart oil containers with their water for the day....it's life changing poor.

 

Good luck to this young man. I plan to watch him run at the State meet and hope the best for him in his journey. I am thankful he was plucked from Honduras and resides in Kentucky....our state needs more kids like Will

Birdbrain, I was there twice for two weeks each time. Agree 100% with your observations. Americans rarely will see poverty like Honduras, 2nd poorest in Western Hemisphere. How about private security at every business, with automatic rifles, ammo double bandeleros with machetes on the hip (on all doors and roofs). Unbelievable, and quite often to protect the businessman from very limited police forces selling protection. Main roads that have not had chuck holes repaired for decades, making driving on the shoulders a better alternative. For this young man to escape that family poverty and be given a real chance in life is quite a story.

I didn't see any businesses where I was...I did get a very up close and personal view of El Salvador....so to everything else in your post, yes, have seen it, lived it...it may be actually worse in the rural mountains. Very tense place to live, especially on the border

Today's Herald referenced that Allen had signed to run for Alabama next year. Just a small note in an article about Lexingtin HS track. Conrats to this apparently outstanding young man.
