To answer your questions about who will prevail Friday night, first, of course, I believe Hopkins Central has a chance.

 

Remember anything is possible in post season play and in March Madness! Having said that, HC definitely will have to control tempo and force Henderson to play a very uptempo style. I just don't see that happening for two reasons! One being HC can't force Hendo to turn the ball over repeatedly and the two guys on the sideline are going to not allow that to happen with adjustments and use of timeouts. Also, HC has no answer for the inside game of Owens and Gilbert. In my opinion, it has been Gilbert's play and Landers that have elevated their chances of winning the Regional Tourney. Advantage is certainly the Lady Colonels! It is their game to lose.

 

As for the second round matchup, I believe Webster has an excellent chance of beating Madisonville after watching them out rebound and play effective defense on Hopkinsville both inside and out. All the pressure is on Madisonville to win and face Henderson in the finals! I believe Madisomville may be overlooking Webster as they eye a rematch with the Lady Colonels in the finals.

 

Ultimately, the second game should be a good one that comes down to who plays hardest defensively, makes outside shots, and plays together! Slight edge to Webster in those areas.

Henderson took care of business tonight by beating Hopkins Central, but only after things were getting interesting on a Lyric Campbell steal and layup. Unfortunately, Lyric came down and sprained her ankle and had to leave the game. Without her, Central was unable to pressure Hendo and the game was effectively over when she went out. Henderson ended up winning by 20 plus. Also, Hopkins Central had no answer for Owens and Gilbert inside whenever they could get the ball down low.

 

In the second game, as I predicted it was Webster over Madisonville 51-39 to establish a 6th district rematch for the Regional Tourney Championship. Madisonville lead by 6 at the half, but Webster used its depth on the bench to help stay in the game as they battle serious foul trouble in the first half. Webster held Madisonville to 6 points in the second half and only one field goal!

 

Looks like Henderson is set for another trip to the Sweet Sixteen if they can just manage to get by a very young but scrappy Webster squad one more time!

Henderson County over Hopkins County Central 54-34 tonight. It was shaping up to be a great game early with the two teams trading leads. The Lady Colonels got some separation late in the 1st quarter and early in the 2nd quarter before the Lady Storm started a run fueled by their full court pressure. I think the score was 23-17 when Hopkins County Central's star player Lyric Campbell went down with an ankle injury and never returned. After that Henderson County took over and never really looked back. The Lady Colonels have looked dominant in both tournament games thus far. Their 1-2 punch inside is just too much for opposing teams.

Webster County over Madisonville-North Hopkins 51-39 tonight. Foul trouble really hurt the Lady Trojans in the 1st half but they were able to stay within striking distance, trailing only 5 at the half. The 2nd half was all Webster County. Defensively they held the Lady Maroons to only 1 made field goal for the entire half. The Lady Trojans made their shots when they mattered most and continued to stretch their lead until the final buzzer. In an odd series of events, Lady Maroon guard Shaniya Whitsell picked up her 4th foul then slams the ball off the backboard in disagreement with the call to pick up a technical and her 5th foul. The game was still up in the air at that point but after the meltdown it was clearly over. It's an all 6th district finals yet again! Even though Webster County is playing great basketball right now, I don't think it's enough to take down Henderson County. The Lady Colonels have really gelled the last couple of weeks and look to be the dominant team in the region yet again.

Henderson County over Webster County 42-41 in a crazy game to say the least. The officiating of the game may have been the craziest part of it all. The game was very physical in the beginning and the officials even had to separate a few players on a few occasions. The Lady Colonels' star player Alisha Owens gets upended going for a rebound and lands head first on the floor during the 1st quarter. She sat for a while but made a short lived return before getting into foul trouble. As if Owens being on the bench wasn't enough, Mikayla Gilbert took a shot to the ribs and sat the final minutes of the 2nd quarter.

 

The officials tightened up quite a bit toward the end of the 1st half and got even tighter in the 2nd half. Henderson County got a lot of well deserved handchecking fouls because their guards couldn't handle how physical the Lady Trojans were with the ball. On the other hand, the play off the ball was allowed to be way too physical and Webster County took full advantage on that. It looked like it was really hard for the players to adjust to the officiating since it was really tight in some aspects and very loose in others. Both teams dealt with foul trouble in the 2nd half but I think it hurt Henderson County more than it did Webster County since their stud post players spent a lot of time on the bench. Maybe the craziest call of the game was the 4th foul on Alisha Owens. She had just returned after picking up her 3rd foul, and in a scuffle for the ball that involved Mikayla Gilbert and a Webster County player, Owens mysteriously gets the foul that should have went to Gilbert. With a lot of time left in the 3rd quarter she went to the bench until very late in the game.

 

The Lady Trojans played their butts off and honestly I think they wanted it more than the Lady Colonels. But there was simply no answer for Owens and Gilbert when they were both able to be in the game at the same time. Emma Lander also made some clutch 3-pointers when she became the focal point of the offense, not to mention Chester's huge free throws to keep Webster County from extending their lead. I just hated to see the Lady Trojans lose the way they did. A turnover on a muffed pass while trying to hold the ball for nearly a minute and a game deciding foul, that could have easily been a no call, to set up the game winning free throw.

 

The effort on the court and the excitement of the crowd was championship game worthy. The inconsistency of the officiating and the fact that the game was decided by whistles was not championship game worthy. I believe the better team won but everyone in the gym walked out wondering what if. What if there hadn't been so many touchy fouls called against Henderson County, would Webster County have still taken control after halftime? What if Owens and Gilbert had been able to avoid some of the questionable foul calls against them, would Henderson County have pushed the game out to a double digit advantage? What if the game hadn't been decided on a questionable foul with 1 second remaining, would Webster County have pulled out the victory in overtime?

Henderson 10th region title in 12 years

At the beginning of the year, this appeared to be an unlikely result after Henderson lost the four seniors from last years regional winner but Coaching and a reservoir of talented players again prevailed. The little 6th continues to excell in girls basketball and baseball while the 8th continues to control boy's basketball.

I don't know that I would call the 6th district little when it has one of the largest enrollments in the state with Henderson County.

A 3 team district with a big school and two small schools with no movement of players between the three.

Gilbert played out of her mind in the tournment. That was for the season, Carter you know night in night out what you where going to get. Gilbert had games where she didn't make those jumps shots from 4 feet. If Gilbert would have played the whole season like the 5 tournment games lady cols wouldn't have 9 losses maybe just 5.

I would still lead toward Gilbert because her numbers for the season were better and she played the whole season. Samantha Carter missed a lot of time. Even if you don't go Gilbert over Carter, there were some other snubs that were more deserving. I just don't like honoring someone who missed nearly half the games and is a role player over someone who is a go-to player for their team and played all season.

Sam missed 5 games. Henderson got three players on all region surely they deserve to get three since they where best team in the region Webster also got three and they where top 4 all year.
