6th Region girls report for January 15th, 2016

 

 

Teams are getting back into the swing of things after the holiday tournaments. It is time for everyone to try to avoid the January “wall” that teams often hit and get prepared to get healthy and make improvements to get them in a position to reach their goals. The 6th region, from this writer’s standpoint, is yet to have a big “mover” in either direction. Things are playing out pretty close to what most people would have predicted before the season.

 

 

1. Butler Bearettes (13-3)

Butler still looks to be the frontrunner in the region. They have come back with 4 wins so far in January including a convincing victory over Mercer County who is ranked in the top 10 in the state. Coach Larry Just does a great job getting his team rolling in the right direction when it matters most.

 

2. Bullitt East Lady Chargers (10-3)

Bullitt East has come back from the Christmas break with 2 victories. They continue to play at a high level without Lindsey Duvall. Other players, Alyssa Peak, Kirstie Henn, and Raegan Williams have stepped up their game so that the Lady Chargers are still in the mix to represent the region in Northern Kentucky.

 

3. Mercy Jaguars (10-6)

The Jaguars continue to play a top notch schedule that will pay dividends in the postseason. They have returned from the break with a victory over Ensworth from Tennessee and a 12 point defeat at the hands of top 10 Dupont Manual. The Jaguars hold their top 3 position for another week.

 

 

4. North Bullitt Lady Eagles (12-4)

The Lady Eagles were off to a very quick start but have recently been bitten by the injury bug. Their 2 leading scorers, Lauren Deel and Katie Downey, have missed parts or all of the last 3 games with ankle injuries. The Lady Eagles will need to have other players step up until Deel and Downey can return to full strength.

 

 

5. PRP Lady Panthers (12-5)

The Lady Panthers are putting together a solid season. They have returned with a 2-1 mark to date in January with the lone defeat a 2 point loss to a scrappy Assumption team. The Lady Panthers still have a chance to prove they should be higher on the list with games remaining with Bullitt East and North Bullitt.

 

 

6. Bullitt Central Lady Cougars (9-8)

The Lady Cougars have returned with a 3-2 January mark. It has been reported that they are dealing with some injuries and other issues. Their starting point guard, Lexi Graham, has re-injured a knee and may only be available for limited playing time down the road. Their 6’2” senior center, Shelby Flener, has also reportedly left the team. Their future success will depend on how fast they can fill those roles.

 

 

7. Holy Cross Lady Cougars (8-7)

 

The Lady Cougars have only played one game since returning from Charleston, South Carolina. Holy Cross schedules around a Senior Class retreat at the beginning of January explaining the team’s limited games early in the month. The Lady Cougars still have a chance to move up with games remaining with PRP and Bullitt Central.

 

 

8. Fairdale Lady Bulldogs (7-8)

The Lady Bulldogs have been busy so far in January compiling a 2-2 record. This team is very athletic, but still very young. They are holding their own up to this point and are gaining valuable experience. If Coach Price can keep them all on this path, they will have a bright future in upcoming seasons.

 

 

9. Fern Creek Lady Tigers (6-11)

The Lady Tigers are still trying to adjust to a midseason coaching change---details are still unavailable. They have returned from the break with an overtime loss to Presentation and a “close” loss to Bullitt East. The Tigers still have time to climb the regional ladder with several games with teams rated ahead of them.

 

 

10. Jeffersontown Lady Chargers (7-7)

Jeffersontown has continued their 500 season going 2-2 in January. Their next game is with Fern Creek on January 19th. This will be an immediate opportunity for them to gain a spot or two.

 

11. Doss Lady Dragons (6-8)

Doss moves ahead of Valley after a dominating victory over the Vikings. The Lady Dragons followed that up with a competitive game with Caverna.

 

 

12. Valley Lady Vikings (5-7)

The Lady Vikings drop a couple of spots after opening January with 2 losses. The team will have an extended time to prepare for Dixie Highway rival PRP on January 20th.

 

 

13. Southern Lady Trojans (6-11)

Southern has gone 1-2 since returning from the holiday break. Southern is 2-2 in the district and has an upcoming game with district favorite North Bullitt on January 19th.

 

 

14. Moore Lady Mustangs (3-15)

The Lady Mustangs have hit a rough patch in losing 9 of their last 10 games. In glancing at their upcoming schedule, it seems that it is favorable for them to pick up a few wins and get back on track before the end of the month.

 

 

15. Western Lady Warriors (2-9)

Western has also lost 9 of their last 10 games. The Lady Warriors need to turn things around if they hope to have a chance to compete in district play.

 

 

16. Beth Haven Lady Bobcats (6-4)

Beth Haven, a very small school, has posted 6 wins to date over schools of similar size. When they have played teams ranked ahead of them in the region, they haven’t fared so well. They could arguably be bumped up a couple of spots based on total wins, but if they played Western and/or Moore they might come out on the short end of both of those contests.

 

17. Whitefield Lady Wildcats (2-12)

Whitefield continues to struggle as the season goes on. They are also a small school doing the best they can with the athletes they have. They have a loss to Beth Haven which puts them in this spot.

 

 

18. Iroquois Lady Raiders (0-11)

The Lady Raiders are having a rough go of it this season. Their offensive struggle is easily detected by the fact that they have only managed to score 20 points in a game one time this season. Hopefully new coach, Greg Schackert, can see some light at the end of the tunnel the rest of the way.

Pretty fair list????? Mercy and Butler play tonight......that could shake some things up or distance Butler from the pack.

Butler seems to be clear favorite in this region, but mercy plays scrappy ball that can mess with the best of teams.

 

I'm still shocked about Etown v butler outcome. Would take etown 10 out of 10 times in the game but would not think they would lose like they did over Christmas to them... But then again Erin Boley is one of the best in the US

I don't think Mercy can beat Butler on their home floor. The game that will be interesting is tuesday-- Bullitt east @ mercy.
