6th Region girls report for January 4th, 2016

The first half of the season is behind us already and there are only a couple of changes in the rankings for the region. The top stays close to the same with 4 or 5 teams that have at least a slim chance to represent the region in Northern Kentucky. The upcoming schedules, including the Louisville Invitational Tournament will help to further sort out the contenders. Let’s hope all teams get healthy and put their best foot forward down the stretch. Now is when it really starts to get exciting!!!

1. Butler Bearettes (9-3)

Butler continues to hold the top spot in the region despite 3 losses---1 to Etown in the finals of the tough Traditional Bank Classic before Christmas at Lexington Catholic and 2 in the Naples Holiday Shootout. Butler has defeated some quality opponents since the last report (South Warren, Mason County, Mercy).

2. Bullitt East Lady Chargers (8-3)

The Lady Chargers continue to play well without UK signee Lindsey Duvall. They went 2-1 in a pre-Christmas tourney that they host losing to Male in the finals. They then went 3-0 in the Queen of the Palms tournament in Fort Myers, Florida after Christmas.

3. (Tie) Mercy Jaguars (9-5)

The Jaguars have found their stride against a continued tough schedule. They went 3-1 at the Traditional Bank Classic losing to eventual runner up Butler. They then went 2-1 in the Carolina Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina.

3. (Tie) North Bullitt Lady Eagles (12-3)

The Lady Eagles have played very well early and were the first girls team in the state to reach 10 wins. They won the pre-Christmas tournament held at Nelson County, defeating Henry Clay in the final. They then made it to the championship game in the Destin Holiday Classic losing by 3 while playing without Bellarmine signee Katie Downey (ankle).

5. PRP (10-4)

The Lady Panthers have started the season strongly with a 10-4 record. Over Christmas, they went 2-1 in the Lady Marshal Holiday Classic including a nice win over Allen County-Scottsville. They then finished the break winning the championship of the Southern Lady Trojans Holiday Jamboree.

6. Bullitt Central Lady Cougars (7-6)

Bullitt Central is dealing with some injuries but has had a nice start to the season. The Lady Cougars went 3-0 in the Taylor County Christmas Tournament. Injuries played a role in the team dropping 2 games in the Lady Jacket Classic at Louisville Central High School after Christmas.

7. Holy Cross Lady Cougars (8-6)

The Lady Cougars were off to a good start on the season, but stumbled a little over the Christmas break going 1-2 in both the Bullitt East tournament and the Carolina Invitational in Charleston, SC.

8. Fern Creek Lady Tigers (6-9)

The Lady Tigers ran into some tough competition over the Christmas break going 0-3 in the tournament at Lexington Catholic and then going 1-3 in the Titan Holiday Classic held at Mercer County High School. According to the KHSAA website, they have had a mid-season coaching change (No details).

9. Valley Lady Vikings (5-5)

The Lady Vikings hold their spot in the rankings with an even beginning to the season. Most recently, they went 1-2 in the Southern Lady Trojans Holiday Classic.

10. Fairdale Lady Bulldogs (5-6)

Fairdale was on a pretty good roll to start the season and then went 0-3 against tough competition at the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic. With a couple more wins, Fairdale could jump a couple of spots in the 6th region rankings.

11. Doss Lady Dragons (5-7)

Doss went 3-3 over the holidays---going 1-2 in the pre-Christmas tourney at Bardstown High School. They then bounced back with a 2-1 mark in the Lady Trojans Classic at Southern.

12. Western Lady Warriors (2-7)

Western has had a tough start to the season with only 2 wins to this point. They were 1-2 in the Lady Cat Classic held before Christmas at Waggener High School. Western did not play after Christmas with the next game scheduled for January 5th vs. Jeffersontown.

13. Southern Lady Trojans (5-9)

Southern went 1-2 in both of their Christmas tournaments (Lady Redhawk Classic at Seneca High School and their own tournament that they host). They have split games with Moore but jumped the Mustangs based on their 5 wins so far as opposed to only 1 win last season.

14. Moore Lady Mustangs (3-11)

The Lady Mustangs struggled over Christmas going 1-3 against good competition in the tournament at Marshall County. They followed that up going 1-2 in the Southern Lady Trojans Holiday Classic.

15. Beth Haven Lady Bobcats (4-3)

Beth Haven jumps up a couple of spots after posting 4 wins to this point of the season. The Lady Bobcats did not play in any tournaments over the holidays.

16. Whitefield Lady Wildcats (1-10)

Whitefield has had a rough time early posting only one win. One of their better players was scheduled to move with her family at year’s end so improvement of others will be key to future success.

17. Iroquois Lady Raiders (0-8)

The Lady Raiders continued to struggle over the Christmas break going 0-3 at the South Oldham Lady Dragon Hoopfest. The team did not play after Christmas with their next game scheduled for January 5th vs. North Oldham.

In regards to Fern Creek having a new coach.......anyone have insight?

Injury bug has hit north bullitt. May have won last 2 if at full strength. But thankfully their injuries are fairly minor!!!
