Coaching Summer Teams

Featured Replies

How involved are High School coaches allowed to be involved with a school summer team?

As involved as they choose to be or want to be w/their program. There are no stipulations regarding time spent w/a coach other than the "Two-Week Dead-Period" in late June to early July(June 24th thru July 9th--I believe those are the dates) that coaches are NOT supposed to have any contact w/their players.

They can attend summer team camps, have open gyms, etc. as long as nothing happens during the "dead-period".

Thanks. Is that true for all sports? I don't have an agenda toward girls basketball coaches, I just was curious as to why girls coaches can participate with their teams, but baseball can not.

Or maybe I misunderstand. Can baseball coaches coach a summer team as long as it is not during the 2 week dead period?

And should the 2 week dead period be a different time for baseball if thats true?

The 2 week "dead" period is for all sports, no contact w/your coach during that period of time. No contactmeans the player/coach cannot have any direct communication involving the sport in which the player is involved w/that coach in direct relation to the sport.

I see no reason why a baseball coach cannot coach during the summer, at least no state restrictions that I am aware of.

Just to expand on the dead period, it is not just the coaches. Players could not wear the HS gear, use the weight room, show up in the gym to just shootaround, walking in parades as a team (there is a KHSAA ruling preventing a cheerleading group from walking as a unit wearing their uniform in a 4th of July parade) fundraising, etc, etc. In fact, technically, you are not allowed to issue a check from the school account for sports in regards to athletes during that time.

Players can attend individual camps but not allowed to wear school practice gear during that time or the school can not provide transportation to the individual camp or have one big check issued from the school to pay for kids attending individual camps.
