Sounds super impressive, but difficult to really be able to sink your teeth into that.

Yep.....nice to see in print, but curious not to see any west coast teams.....regionalized?

When I see a score like Mason 6, Elder 2, it really puts a lot of these things into perspective. Then, beyond that, Mason will be a big underdog to St. Ignatius this weekend.

NSCAA National Top 25 has St Ignatius (Cleveland) #2 and Mason #12. No other OH or KY schools, but CCH with an also got votes.

 

Maher Ohio Rankings has St. Ignatius #1, Mason #2, Summit Country Day #7 and Elder #12. Mason and St Ignatius are in the Ohio Division I semi-finals tonight and play each other this weekend in finals if they both win.

 

CCH finished #1 in KY Maher Rank and won state finals.

 

Top Drawer Soccer National Fab 50 for fall HS has St Ignatius #2, Mason #4, Elder #27, CCH #28, and Trinity #29.

 

CCH had an amazing season. Whatever various rankings or assessments have to say about it there is no doubt in my mind that CCH was the best team in KY this year and could likely give any HS team in the nation a very good game.

Actually this score was 5-2, Mason over Elder and only 3-2 at the half. Closer than the score indicates from what I heard. Elder was good but I still feel CCH could have beaten them but were really not into a groove yet.

My point is the same, I don't think they are the best team in Cincy, so 5th in the country seems ambitious. All good though, listen, it is an unbiased 3rd party, so I'll take it!!!

Oh, I'm in no way saying they (CCH) are 5th in the country or even top 2 in the city. The absence of west coast and east coast teams tells me those rankings are more regional maybe. I was merely pointing out that you can't make too many assumptions based on a score of a single game (Mason/Elder or Elder/CCH). Quite frankly, I thought Summit looked better than Elder to me, although Elder beat Summit 2-1.

 

Mason is by all accounts the best team in the city but I haven't seen them play. They did beat a rather mediocre Moeller team only 1-0 after the Elder victory so, like I said, one game anything can happen.

Correct, especially in the south I think more teams play spring soccer but I'm not certain. And for those interested, Mason fell in the semis last night to Hilliard, 2-1. Interesting looking at the photos of the Mason team on the Enquirer site, I see at least 3 CUP players that the CCH kids played against regularly in club soccer. My guess is with the size of Mason high school and the number of quality players they have in that area of town, they had a deep/quality talent pool to pick from.

correct. Many states in the south either play spring only or play winter. A couple I'm aware of do a split season (Nov - Feb with 2 weeks off during winter break). Keep in mind this is pure american football country and resource available and focus is a major factor even more so than in northern states.

It was a great game to watch with a very large talent pool for both teams. I was a bit surprised by the results though but it is HS and emotions come into play more. The talent pool coming up for Mason is equally impressive as the current graduating class which I'm assuming you are referring to in terms of CUP players. IMHO, the biggest difference in watching Ohio state tournament games versus Kentucky state games is the total quality of matches throughout. You almost have to go back to early Ohio regional matches to find lopsided matches versus some of the games I saw scores on in Kentucky including CCHS' semi-final. Of course much of the discrepancy between the two is due to the shear volume of talented teams Ohio which is based on the volume of schools. However; I also think the discrepancy in quality state matches is in part due to how Ohio does a seeding of teams and brackets are set as well as how their set their regions which is why you can see a Mason/Moeller state quaterfinal match.

In no way am I trying to shed a negative light on KHSAA's state tournament beyond wanting as a life long fan of the game wanting to see the best teams play the best whenever possible. That said, this is High School athletics and will leave it at that.

I think a lot of people wouldn't mind seeing a seeding system in place in Kentucky as well but it's unlikely to change. As you mentioned, the semi-final match for CCH was rather lopsided as were some of the other earlier round games for Henry Clay and Bowling Green. In a seeded system you probably have CovCath/Trinity in the semi-final instead.

 

I'd been looking forward to a Mason/St. Ignatius final but I guess that's out the window.
