October 5, 201510 yr Fangraphs uses a stat called "Shutdown" to measure a relief pitcher's value and performance and says it is a better indicator than a save. It simply measures whether you helped or hurt your team's chances of winning. For example, a closer who comes into the 9th with a 3-run lead but gives up 2 runs and leaves the bases loaded STILL gets credited with a save despite not pitching well. Here's an explanation of the "showdown" and corresponding "meltdown" stat. October 5, 201510 yr Who was #1? I'd guess Joaquin Benoit (Padres) or Justin Wilson (Yanks). For what it's worth, Tony Watson led the league in holds -- a stat that is very comparable to saves. Watson recorded 41 holds (1.91 ERA, 0.96 WHIP). 2nd closet was Sergio Romo with 34, and Joe smith (Angels) with 32.

He has had a great year.
