Varsity Games With Only 2 Refs

I've heard that there have been quite a few games this year that have only had 2 referees for N KY high school games. :poop: I know that from reading other threads, referee numbers have been on the decline for the past couple of years. :down:

 

Since it doesn't appear that there will be an over abundance of referees going forward, what can be done?

 

If I remember correct, a few years back, it seemed like the boys would play on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the girls would play on Mondays and Wednesdays. This helped with the ref pool not being strained as much. Now it seems that you have both boys and girls teams playing on any given night which has to be an absolute nightmare for ref scheduling.

 

Is this something that maybe the coaches need to work with the ref scheduler about?

Whatever they are getting paid, it's probably not enough.

In many states the girls HS season is in the spring and the boys HS season is in the fall. This makes a lot of sense, no need to share resources, facilities, referees and the top coaches could coach a boys HS team in the fall and a girls HS team in the spring.

 

For an example IL Boys HS soccer season starts Aug 12, ends Nov 7.

IL Girls HS season starts Feb 29, ends June 4.

 

Logical assumption is this disrupts the club soccer, it doesn't.

IL is in Region 2, same region as KY. So it does not interfere with club soccer. They both compete in the same Regional and National Championship Tournaments.

This is a win for club soccer also, boys and girls U15-U19 do not need to share resources. More training fields available, less club referees required, the top club coaches can coach both club girls and boys, different seasons.

What time do games start?

 

One of the challenges we are having in baseball is getting enough guys who can be there for a 5:00 game. In some regions, frosh and JV have 2 umpires. In NKY we have one for frosh and one for 95% of the JV games.
