Song discoveries, thanks to youtube

It's a relaxing evening in the Lawnboy house tonight, got the basement all to myself. I'm sitting at my desk with my daughters "beats" on and searching music on youtube, and I came across quite a few tunes that I have NEVER heard until now. Some from bands I'm familiar with in one way or another, and some had no clue off. I really like some these tunes and can't believe they have been out for many years and this is the first time hearing them.

Has anyone else come across tunes in this fashion? If so, share them with us.

Here's one I came across earlier, from 1980 "Dreams" by Barry Goudreau. Barry Goudreau is the debut self-titled album of original Boston guitar front man, Barry Goudreau, Boston members Brad Delp (vocals), and Sib Hashian (drums), and future Boston singer Fran Cosmo (bass).

Interesting find LB13, and cool song. This sounds like it could easily be a Boston lost track from the vocals all the way down to the guitars. Tom Sholtz isn't here, but something tells me that he must've somehow been involved with the production of it.

I stumbled upon this guy -- Mike Masse -- several years ago on YouTube. He has an amazing rendition of Toto's "Africa", which I think far surpasses the original (as well as any covers that I have heard).

Watch this video. Masse absolutely crushes it, and the crowd hardly notices. I thought it was awesome when his partner started chuckling...as if he knew how well Mike performed & how the crowd barely appreciated it.

Although I have immense respect for acoustic guitar virtuosos, I can become quickly bored with listening for too long, and I do believe that I'd fall asleep at a live performance.

With that said, I stumbled upon this guy doing "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye as an acoustic instrumental, and I was amazed at how he included every last nuance of the song with perfection.

Every once in awhile an original gem rises out of all the forgettable pop schlock that makes up the Top 40, and this tune for me is a good example of one of them.

I get a kick out of finding out that there was more history to a band than I was originally aware of.

Here is a video from 1974 of AC/DC before Bon Scott joined the band with Dave Evans handling the vocals.

Dave apparently didn't last but about 10 months with the band.

Bon eventually sang this song with the band too, and it ended up on their High Voltage release.

This dude is AMAZING, he can really cover a wide range of songs. I watched quite a few of his songs.....and yes, he did a great job on the Toto song.

. I post the following video in this new thread....http://bluegrasspreps.com/television-films-music/what-you-spinning-309345.html. Dude nails this one.

au contraire mon frère

Barry Goudreau had written many songs in hopes that Scholz would incorporate them into the next Boston LP. Scholz did not express interest in using any of Goudreau's work. In 1980, Goudreau recorded his first solo LP titled Barry Goudreau, using Brad Delp and Fran Cosmo (who would join Boston in 1991) on vocals, and Sib Hashian on drums. The record company sought to cash in big time with this "almost Boston" line-up. The LP successfully hit the airwaves with the songs "Dreams" and "Mean Woman Blues". The album was promoted as a kind of "Boston-lite" and when Scholz caught word of this he was furious. Ultimately, it was this album that triggered Scholz to ask Goudreau to leave Boston.

I bet that Tom wasn't too thrilled either that they copied his signature guitar sound.

Really cool tune. Delp and Boston was one of the soundtracks of my growing up years. Just doesn't get any better than cranking up Delp's voice in the car with top down on a hot summer day.

Here's one I stumbled across on Youtube a couple of years back. It was an '80's tune that I somehow missed back then. Laura Branigan also did a nice cover of it. Anyone remember this band "Alphaville" ?

Here's a little gem that some of you lovers of eighties music may have missed or forgotten. You'll remember Earth, Wind, and Fire from the seventies. Well, this song features EW&F's lead singer, Phillip Bailey. Here's Bailey with "Walking on the Chinese Wall." Nice tune with that velvety smooth sound of Bailey leading the way. Enjoy.
