Next year's Mercy team will be a championship contender. Mark my words. Next year's Seniors all know how to win and have won consistently not only with Mercy but with Mava, Kiva and Union. The incoming Sophomore group is strong and the "to be" Juniors are great players. Synergy with the new coach will be the challenge but Mercy will find a class act, great coach and leader. I expect great things.

Mercy does not win state in 2015. They just don't. My guess goes to...hold on to your seat.... Sacred Heart. They had a talented group last year and didn't get a lot of credit. I mean, they were the only team to knock off Mercy. But they lose very little from last year's squad, so I'm going with the Valkyries.

Also, Garvey going to Purdue is a good move. Obviously he wants his own program at some point, might as well start coaching with a top tier big ten program.

That not much of a prediction there Capt. Obvious. There's only 4 Championship contenders in the Commonwealth - Mercy, Sacred Heart, Assumption, Notre Dame. Will Mercy win their region? Of course. And if the bracket lines-up the right way, they can cruise right into the Championship. But the real question is where would you rank them in the Big 4? I would put them 4th.

I'm still vague on what you are saying.. you said Mercy will "be there in the end" and Mercy is a "championship contender". Since "the end" is the Championship match, are you saying Mercy will make it to the final match and finish 1st or 2nd? "Championship contender" can mean almost anything. Are we talking final 2, 4, 8, 16?

I think people are arguing over what exactly is a championship "contender". I think it's entirely possible for a team to make it all the way to the championship without truly being a real "contender". Greenwood made it to the final a couple of years ago, but did anyone truly believe they were going to beat Assumption? Was Greenwood a "contender" or just someone lucky enough to make it to the title game.

 

I think that Mercy could, if the brackets are kind, make to the championship game, but I'd not pick them to beat Assumption, Sacred Heart, or NDA. NDA will be strong as will SH. Assumption might still be weak in the front line but they have a back row defense that most colleges would love.

 

Mercy has a couple of good back row players, but they are losing almost all of their offensive production in Jewell, Rachel, and Hamrick. Having seen their JV and freshman teams play several times (and not belittling the players on them), my opinion is that they do not have the replacements for what they've lost.

 

I think they can win their region, make state, but will not win it. Next years champion is most likely SH or NDA.

Getting back to the original thread, has anyone heard any names rumored to be "contenders" for this position? Interviews were supposed to start this week from last gossip I heard.

Some interviews were done last week, but no word on who the candidates interviewed were. From what I have heard, damn near everyone in Louisville applied for the position.

Matt Thomerson has been named to replace Todd Garvey as Mercy Academy’s head volleyball coach, athletic director Mark Evans announced Thursday. Thomerson was the former coach at Louisville Holy Cross. 91-51.......that was his record there. I kind of feel "meh" about this.

 

I have to say I'm not enthused with this hire. He's ok, but he's not the best of those applying. He's definately not the "home run" hire Evans said he needed to make--more like a bunt.

I'll just leave it at this....I bet Ron Kordes likes this hire.
